#FierceFeb #SheWorksHardForTheMoney 🥄I love to cook but I have never wanted to do it professionally (much as I love to read about women who do) because of how hard the work is. These five books are about women in the food industry who work hard for the money--from pastry chef, to farmer, to restauranteur, to apprentice chef, to a stint in culinary school. (The top two are still in my #TBR stacks & the bottom three I have read & enjoyed. )🥄📚👍

batsy Yes, it must be incredibly hard work. Great choices 🍽️ 6y
Cinfhen Love this ....as always❣️❣️❣️❣️great picks ~ all look fascinating 6y
Johanna414 My husband cooked professionally for 10 years and it‘s such a stressful job! He was a sauté chef in a high end seafood restaurant and hearing about his nights at work gave me a lot of respect for anyone in food service! 6y

Kimberly and her mother arrived from Hong King to NYC. The days are long and the work is endless. Her mother couldn‘t possibly keep up with her work at the factory alone, so Kimberly shuffled between middle school and the sweatshop, helping as much as she can.
The novel takes you behind the stereotypes of Asian immigrants, it looks at the immigrant experience of two Chinese women in the 1980s.

#SheWorksHardForTheMoney Mia Warren is one of the central characters in this great book. She is an artist and is one of the hardest working characters in the books I‘ve read recently-ish ! She is so completely committed to her work which I always think is really impressive. 💚💚💚 #FierceFeb

batsy Interesting! Somehow, hardworking *artists* are rarely depicted in fiction. I liked this one for this reason, too - it showed the actual daily work of a painter 6y
Cinfhen I love how everyone interpreted this prompt!! 6y
Christine11 @batsy I totally agree - plus I‘m always so impressed by artists, they always seem so committed to it ! I‘m going to have to add So Much Blue to the TBR too - thanks ! 😊💗 6y

Taraji is just badass in my opinion! To pay for her collage she worked as a secretary at The Pentagon and nights as a waitress on a cruise ship! I recently ordered this book and can‘t wait to read it! I usually don‘t enjoy memoirs, but like I said she‘s bad ass and I want to know more! I really want to see her new movie Proud Mary! And I love Empire!

Richryan52 @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Have you watched her in Person of Interest? 6y

Richryan52 @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I think it is one of the best series to ever air on Tv. But you must watch it from the beginning 6y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Richryan52 maybe I can record it and binge watch it one weekend! 6y

Fanny Fern, pen name for Sara Willis, newspaper writer and feminist, published the novel,Ruth Hall in 1855. When widowed, Ruth was abandoned by monied family members, forced to house her 5 year old with abusive grandparents, earned a pittance through free lance writing,& dined on milk & bread with her 2yr old. Eventually she gains attention& money with her pieces empathizing with the plight of the poor & women.#sheworkshardforthemoney.

batsy Oh wow, this sounds fascinating! Thank you, I've stacked it. 6y
kspenmoll @batsy It is fascinating, given when she was writing & the cultural expectations of women at the time. There is some stereotyping about Jews, some characters rather two dimensional, black & white, but I think it is worth reading as she was ahead of her time in her writing/ portrays of female experience. 6y
Cinfhen Very interesting! Nice choice😀 6y

batsy I totally understand; something to keep in mind when reading books by authors from the past. Groundbreaking in some ways and not so much in other ways! 6y

Margot learns quickly that she has to sell and work everything she‘s got to make sure her sister, Thandie, doesn‘t have to the same. #Sheworkshardforthemoney so Thandie can go to school and be everything Margot isn‘t.

Diane Arbus: A Biography | Patricia Bosworth
post image

Diane Arbus was a working commercial photographer while still taking care of her husband and children as the times demanded. She eventually broke out of her traditional roles to become an artist, taking portraits of people at the margins of society. There's also an excellent film, "Fur," that offers an imagined account of her finding her artistic voice (from the director of "Secretary " ?).
