#IdiomInsight I always assumed #OnCloud9 was an esoteric expression like 7th heaven, but apparently it‘s a scientific one. It originates from the cloud classification system discovered in the 1800s. In the category of clouds, the 9th cloud, cumulonimbus, is the tallest reaching up to 30,000 feet.
So, being on cloud nine is akin to being at the highest point of happiness.
A cumulonimbus is also the fluffiest, comfiest-looking of all cloud types.

TheEllieMo I had no idea about “cloud number 9”! It‘s a bit of a misassociation, though - cumulonimbus are the clouds that bring thunderstorms, and are the most turbulent of clouds. 7mo
IndoorDame @TheEllieMo hahahaha I love that!!! It‘s somehow perfect for our understanding of our own emotions 7mo
Amiable I love the phrase “category of clouds.” It sounds like a collective noun. And what is the collective noun for clouds? A clowder of clouds? A clown car of clouds? 😀 7mo

IndoorDame @Amiable ooooh, excellent question! I asked google and it suggested billow, fluffle, circus, and soufflé…fluffle is clearly the most fun of its whimsical suggestions but I like clowder ? (edited) 7mo
Soubhiville Cool fact! And I‘m loving this conversation 😊 7mo
Eggs Great info and lovely pic!! I love “fluffles” of clouds ☁️ 🤍🌤️ 7mo
Amiable @IndoorDame @Eggs I‘ve heard “fluffle” used as a collective noun for rabbits. While I am a huge fan of alliteration (hence my suggestion of “clowder”), I may have to lean into “a billow of clouds.” That sounds so …puffy. 😀 7mo
IndoorDame @Amiable omg a fluffle of rabbits sounds like the most adorable thing ever!!!! I‘ve never heard that before. Billow is apparently the suggestion of (unnamed) poets, so you have good taste 😄 7mo
Amiable @IndoorDame I think “colony” is the word most often used to describe a bunch of rabbits, but fluffle is way better—agreed! 7mo
Amiable Also, this discussion reminds of one I had at work several years ago. At the time, we had 5 guys named Mark in our department. My boss used to describe them as “The Marks,” but we decided they needed their own collective noun. So we came us with “a punctuation of Marks.” 😀 Which worked on many levels —especially since we are the communications department. 😄 (edited) 7mo
IndoorDame @Amiable a punctuation of Marks has such a good ring to it! 💜💜💜 7mo
