Too sarcastic in tone for me. It was funny and entertaining at first, but then it grated on me. These are real women who did interesting things, and it seems like she‘s almost making fun of them. Weird tone.

Pickpick

This history of Jamestown was ultimately an interesting if uneven book. There were some parts in the middle that dragged on and made me fall asleep in less than 15 minutes, but the story picked up near the end. Most Jamestown lore focuses on Capt. John Smith and Pocahontas, but there‘s a lot more to know. I like this time in history when religious and cultural norms were in flux. And any book that features James I earns points from me! 😉👑

I Sailed with Columbus | Miriam Schlein

Mehso-so

I Sailed with Columbus by Miriam Schlein is a historical fiction picture book about a boy who claims he sailed with Christopher Columbus and he adventures along the way. This book would work well for partner reading to help promote collaboration between students. A UDL strategy that aligns with this book is strategy 3.1 (activate or supply background knowledge) and an EL strategy is strategy 2 (promote cooperation in small groups).

NicoleCumbo Https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/Christopher-Columbus-extension-activities/ provides some lessons to help deepen the students understanding of this book. #ucflae3414sp18 6y

I finished this audiobook on my evening walk. It was interesting, with lots of information, but I struggled to stay focused sometimes while listening. I listened to it as a refresher on Jamestown history since I‘m starting a class read of Blood on the River with my 7th graders.

Kaye Beautiful scenery. 6y
Daisey @Kaye Thanks! It‘s been cold lately and today was the first day I‘ve felt like walking outside for a while. I appreciated some time out of the house at a comfortable temperature. 6y

TheNextBook The 6th graders I work with are doing a class read of Blood on the River as well. Is this you first time reading it? I‘ve seen mixed reviews. 6y
Daisey @TheNextBook I really like it and think it gives a pretty good introduction for junior high kids that don‘t know much about colonial history. It gives the students some idea of how unfairly the Native Americans were treated which is not something most of my students have considered. We do spend a lot of time talking about how it is historical fiction, not nonfiction, and this does not mean it really did happen quite like this either. 6y
Daisey @TheNextBook I would say it still portrays John Smith and some other colonists more positively than they might deserve. We read a few other nonfiction sources to supplement, like excerpts from a book about forensic archaeology that possibly identifies the boy killed as Richard rather than James. 6y
TheNextBook Thanks for the feedback. Since I hadn‘t read it I was unsure how they would portray Native Americans and was worried. I‘ll keep what you said in mind in class. 6y
tpixie @Daisey you do such s great job walking at night!! I‘m so tired 💤 6y
Daisey @tpixie Not so much in the winter; this was the first time in a couple of weeks! 6y
