Today‘s scores from the Little Free Library on the way to my 3 hrs of ballet. It‘s going to be a lovely day. It‘s warm already. On my walk home I‘ll visit another book swap. Then I have nothing to do for the rest of the weekend but I will grab a chai, go to the beach, drink champagne in my pjs and cook up a storm ready for more work lunches and ballet dinners. I suppose I best do a bit of housework too 😢 eg change the sheets.

I decided to throw in a nonfiction read about art. I found this one to be a very good read if you're not a well read art nonfiction reader. Plenty of information. I perhaps loved this read due to the fact I've seen many of these artists works and have visited some of the locations that were inspirational for these people.

One of my friends from work recommend this #chunkster and it was truly a difficult, heartbreaking, eye-opening, entertaining read. It was interesting to be able to read about these women who strongly put their mark on history and art.

Meditations and musing on art. What makes something art? What makes art good? Where is the cutting edge? I enjoy Perry's irreverent, playful ponderings.

He does a lot of hedging his bets, but I do sometimes disagree when he expresses a solid opinion - e.g. that we've reached the end of the road when it comes to innovation & pushing boundaries, or the emphasis on art school as a way in.

⭐️⭐️⭐️

(Something did upset me. See comments.)

RaeLovesToRead Perry made mention of something that truly horrified my sensitive soul while discussing art created for shock value. No one else seems bothered from what I see on Goodreads, but I truly wish I could unread it. 12mo

Although, Matisse repeats certain statements over the years, it says something of his faith in his methods. The interviews and essays are chronologically organized, and gives us a close look at how Matisse evolved personally and professionally throughout his long career. His ideas on taking from nature, relationships among colors, and focusing on our own sensations are concepts I found inspiring as an artist. A great read for any art history nerd.

“Hatred, rancor, and the spirit of vengeance are useless baggage to the artist. His road is difficult enough and he should cleanse his soul of everything that could make it more so.”

Matisse on Art | Henri Matisse, Jack D. Flam

“I constantly felt aware of the importance of my decision, and despite the certitude that I had found my true path, one in which I was in my own element and not hemmed in as in my earlier life, still I was frightened, realizing that there was no turning back. So I plunged headlong into my work, following the principle that I had heard expressed all through my young life, which was ‘hurry up!‘ Like my parents, I got on with my work…”
