Pickpick

This book was good for what it was, and I enjoyed most of it. It‘s very much a story of a woman completely devoting her life to her husband and God, sometimes to her own detriment. A few scenes where she feels guilty for wanting more from Luther were tough for my 21st century perspective. I appreciate that Katharine‘s story and work is acknowledged through this book. I‘m still most intrigued by the escape of the nuns.

This book is from my grandma‘s bookshelf. It‘s a historical fiction published in 1959 about Katharine, the runaway nun who became the wife of Martin Luther. I started the first few chapters this evening and was more entertained than I expected to be.

Crazeedi I've not heard of this one! But I love all of them, is it on britbox or acorn?? 14mo
Mitch @Crazeedi not sure Diane. We watched all the series of Luther on the BBC. They were filmed on our old neighbourhood which also happens to be Idris Elba‘s old neighbourhood! 14mo
Crazeedi @Mitch that's so cool! I'll be looking for it, it may be available sometime. Thanks!! 14mo

Evangelio: Ein Luther-Roman | Feridun Zaimoglu
post image
Pickpick

A fictional account of Martin Luther's secret stay at Wartburg castle in the 1520s, this one was a lot of fun to read. Zaimoglu joyfully mimics the vocabulary and style of 16th-century German, which made me smile and chuckle over and over again. Choosing to tell the story from his bodyguard's perspective is a neat literary trick, also because Zaimoglu's Luther is a superstitious and vulgar man whose paranoid ramblings get tedious rather quickly.

Engaging and interesting. An overview of the intersection between the Reformation and the German printing industry with emphasis on Wittenberg. A good read for fans of book history, religious history, and European history.

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join the fun if you want.

It's finals crunch time, my health is barely holding together between eye strain, migraine, and fibromyalgia, and it's been 63 days since my last in-person class. But one way or another, in 11 days I will be finished with my first year of graduate school!
