One Thousand Years of Manga | Brigitte Koyama-Richard

More than once I have seen some #littens bemoaning the lack of #manga or likes for manga. I find that interesting in light of the fact that graphic novels seem popular. I'm on a mission to prove that #litsylovesmanga

Do you read manga? Why or why not? If you don't, I am particularly interested in your responses.

CocoReads I have as part of challenges but I don‘t as a general rule. I don‘t know if it‘s reading back to front or just the books themselves but I just don‘t get into it. But I‘m also not really a comic reader. Or graphic novels or whatever. 6y
Sace @CocoReads "...a comic reader. Or graphic novels or whatever." I'm still trying to figure out the distinction between comic and graphic novel ? 6y
Sace @CocoReads PS I've seen a few manga that read in the western style but I do prefer when they are printed in the Japanese "back to front" style. 6y

DGRachel I read my first this year because of Litsy and @TricksyTails. I enjoyed it more than I expected and look forward to reading more. It definitely took some getting used to read right to left, and I found myself reading the pages in the right order, but reading the panels backwards, and I‘d get confused, realize what I was doing, and have to reread several pages. Manga is good brain exercise. 😊 6y
wanderinglynn No, I have never read manga. I am not a huge reader of either comics or graphic novels. I own exactly 3 graphic novels. While I appreciate the art, I prefer to visualize the story myself and I find that they‘re too short for my taste. As to manga, I just don‘t know the characters or series. 6y
Sace @DGRachel lol. It kinda is. When I read a lot of manga then try a graphic novel it takes some adjusting. 6y
Sace @wanderinglynn I agree about graphic novels. I've read some that don't feel fleshed out enough. Both manga and comics can feel very overwhelming when it comes to characters and series. 6y
LaLecture I would and I have started a few series but mangas are too expensive for me to buy them regularly. I don‘t wanna pay 7€ for something I‘ve finished in about an hour 😅. Maybe I should check if my local library has some. 6y
LaLecture @RestlessFickleBookHoarder I‘m not sure if there is an official distinction between comics and graphic novels. I feel like the latter term is used for longer comics, usually for more mature readers (most graphic novels I know are not for kids), that are not necessarily part of a series (while comics mostly are). (Wikipedia helped me a bit with that answer :D.) (edited) 6y
jfalkens I don't. I'm not a fan of not being able to visualize and I feel like the story is condensed. I do like anime just not manga, graphic novels or comic books. 6y
Sace @LaLecture ah! Thanks! 6y
alisiakae I like manga, but haven‘t read a ton of them. My favorite is probably the series lost well-known to Westerners, Sailor Moon. I‘d love to branch out, but there aren‘t that many at our library. 6y
Sace @jfalkens interesting. So many manga become anime. Also interesting about visualizing. Maybe I just like the break from it sometimes 😂 6y
jfalkens @RestlessFickleBookHoarder I know lol when a series doesn't have more I've thought about it but never picked one up 🙈 6y
Sace @4thhouseontheleft Sailor Moon is one I've avoided because it's so long. My library has very few. Mostly on Hoopla and it's not a great selection. 6y
emtobiasz I read a lot of comics and graphic novels through my library, but I‘m always intimidated by the length of manga series and the ongoing saga of them. (I tend to avoid superhero comics for the same reason, although you can often pick up a volume of those at random and follow it.) I‘ve had friends recommend single volume or limited series manga and enjoyed them, though. 6y
Sace @emtobiasz I can understand that. I tend to balk at a manga series with more than 18 volumes, but I've read some great ones with more than 18....oh! And I've gotten stuck at 10 with the 13 volume Death Note (ugh... I may never finish it.) 6y
night_shift I read manga sometimes. They're just so loooong sometimes and that is intimidating. I was caught up with Deadman Wonderland on my phone, but that was several years ago, so I don't know if more was put out. That's another thing - that a manga series could have several volumes and just suddenly stop with no ending and I can't deal with that. 6y
Sace @UnidragonFrag It's funny because I don't think of manga as long because so many of them do end (as opposed to 70 years of Superman 😂) As for a series ending with no ending I guess I've never had that happen to me. At least not in a way that annoyed me. I do tend to try new series by just reading the first three volumes so I've put a lot of series to rest on my own. I can live without an ending. 6y
xicanti I read as much manga as my library can provide. I don't draw a firm distinction between them and any other type of comic, and when the story's good I appreciate how long many manga series get. It's wonderful to spend volume after volume with characters I've come to love, and I always enjoy the Japanese cultural stuff in real-world manga. The wait between volumes DOES seem long whenever I catch up on a good ongoing, though. 6y
Sace @xicanti I whole-heartedly agree about the Japanese cultural stuff! This happens to me a lot with the historical and ghost-y/folk tale ones. 6y
xicanti Re: the comics/graphic novels divide: in the beginning, an original graphic novel (OGN) was any single comic of 72 pages or more. OGNs were important to the North American market because they weren't subject to the Comics Code Authority and so could tackle some edgier material than monthly books, which eventually led many people to consider "graphic novels" a mature, literary designation. Around the mid- to late-90s, 1/2 6y
xicanti a substantial number of people began to insist ALL the comics they read were "graphic novels" because they did NOT read kids' material, no sir. I was one of them, and it was ABSOLUTELY a Pretentious Teenager Phase on my (and most people's) part. "Graphic novel" as an umbrella term still has pretentious associations for me, so I use "comics" instead. TLDR: they're interchangeable now, with HISTORY behind it. 6y
InLibrisVeritas I read quite a few manga each year. It's a bit difficult to get them through my library though, so that typically slows my progress. 6y
Sace @xicanti educational! And now I want to use OGGN (original gangster graphic novel.) I have no problems with kids' material no sir! I prefer it! 6y
Sace @InLibrisVeritas I wonder why libraries don't have them much. 6y
MeliSanchez I read a few series that were recommended to me but I honestly don't know much about manga. I'd like to read more but I feel lost, I don't know where to start! 6y
Sace @MeliSanchez I hear you! The good thing is there's a manga for every taste (IMO) 6y
MeliSanchez @RestlessFickleBookHoarder Definitely! I read one probably like 10 years ago, can't remember the name, but it was inspired by Greek mythology and I honestly had no clue I could find that in manga. It's so difficult to find someone who can recommend titles though, you kinda have to explore on your own! 6y
Sace @MeliSanchez I have to find that manga! Hmmm. Now you've got me thinking that you've got something there. Before Litsy I really had to just go it alone. Since Litsy I've found a lot more, but recommendations are kind of hard because tastes differ so wildly in among manga readers (at least that's been my experience.) 6y
MeliSanchez @RestlessFickleBookHoarder I'll ask my sister, she was the one who recommended it to me, maybe she remembers the name! 6y
Sace @MeliSanchez thanks! 6y
bullbunny I do love manga!!! My favorite is fruits basket! My second is skip beat! 6y
Sace @bullbunny I tried Fruits Basket but it didn't really click with me. Skip Beat is on my list. 6y

#litsyenespanol #litsyenfrancais have been used on Litsy...but not much.

#german is pretty popular

#aufDeutsch #litsyaufDeutsch and #litsylovesmanga have not been used.

I want to be Gretchen and try to make some of these "fetch" hashtags happen more. It's probably not gonna happen, but I like Gretchen's spirit and I want to follow in her footsteps. ?

Stay tuned....

ofbooksandme I would si participate in #Litsyenespanol. I definitely should read more in my own language. Also, #litsyenfrancais because that I 100% need to practice. 6y
Sace @ofbooksandme I'm definitely going to try and read a lot more en español just to use the hashtag! I don't know any French, but I included it anyway. I wonder if there is a #litsyenitaliano hashtag? Tagging @La_Cori 6y
LaLecture I read and post in German a lot, I just mostly don‘t have space for hashtags in my reviews 😅. But I‘ll follow the hashtags because I‘m curious what will be posted about them. 6y

Sace @LaLecture exactly! I probably have a little more room for hashtags, I would love to see them used more for other languages especially if the post is in Spanish or German or whatever for even more practice (reading and in my case writing.) 6y
julesG Will try to use the German tags when talking about German books, but I might not post in German very often. 6y
Sace @julesG woot! 6y
La_Cori @RestlessFickleBookHoarder thanks for the tag.. I've found a few italians in here, but I've never seen an hashtag (#litsyinitaliano) 6y
saguarosally I need more #booksenespanol but they aren‘t nearly as abundant as books in English in the US. I used to live near a Spanish language bookstore but not anymore. 6y
Sace @La_Cori I wonder if there are any #littens learning Italian. 6y
Sace @saguarosally I get a lot on my kindle or order on Amazon.es 6y
saguarosally @RestlessFickleBookHoarder That is where I have found some so far. I have a number of Kindle books. 6y
Sace @saguarosally I do find myself preferring Spanish books in paper form though. For a while I liked kindle because I could hold a word and get a definition in Spanish (which I prefer) but for some reason my new kindle just gives the English translation which I'm not crazy about. 6y
mhillis 😍 #frenchlittens has been used a little too! 6y
Sace @mhillis I went and liked a few posts! 😁 6y
Lcsmcat @tournevis 👍🏻 6y
Lcsmcat @saguarosally I order French language books from Powells. I bet they have Spanish too. 6y
