I listened to two interesting podcasts about George Washington this morning that I wanted to share with the group.

The George Washington Story You Haven't Heard (Adam Grant with Ken Burns) https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/rethinking-the-george-washington-story-you...

Presidential: George Washington https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/business/podcasts/presidential/

TEArificbooks Thanks for sharing! 2h
Amiable Is that the WaPo podcast series they did on every president? I listened to that when it came out —I forgot about it ! Thanks for the reminder! 56m

“The newlyweds [George & Martha Washington] were by no means prudish. …At some point that year, he also drew up a list of books inherited from the Custis estate that may disclose something of the amorous interests of Daniel and Martha Custis, or perhaps of Daniel's father. The couple possessed a copy of ‘Conjugal lewdness: or matrimonial whoredom‘ by Daniel Defoe and ‘The lover's watch: or the art of making love‘ by Aphra Behn.”

👀🤣#USPresidents

BarbaraJean Buddy reads, anyone? We can start with Defoe‘s “Conjugal lewdness: or matrimonial whoredom” 🤣🤣 1d

Interesting fact - Washington seldom marked or wrote in his books. This contrasted with other Founding Fathers like John Adams and Thomas Jefferson.

Amiable Proper respect for his books—I love it! 😀 2d
TEArificbooks Very interesting. I was a bit scandalized when I found out as an adult people annotated books for fun. I hate seeing dog eared pages let alone highlighter and underlines and comments. That being said I once participated in the mark it up Litsy swap and had so much fun seeing other people‘s thoughts. I give away almost all my books after I read them so I won‘t annotate them. 2d
Rome753 @TEArificbooks I must confess, I do have a number of books that I either highlight or write in. They're generally books I intend to keep and likely to go back and reference. If they're books I'm borrowing, or if I'm unlikely to keep them, I don't mark them. 22h

From 1776-1807, New Jersey‘s state constitution gave voting rights to any adult —male, female, white or black —who had lived in NJ for at least a year and was worth at least 50 pounds. In 1807, the Anti-Federalist state legislature restricted the right to vote to white males in order to prevent women (who tended to vote Federalist) from participating in the 1808 presidential election. 😡

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Those bastards! ? On a related note, I live in Union, NJ. A sign is up nearby by apartment that says, "On June 8, 1780 General George Washington established Headquarters at this site in Connecticut Farms (now Union Township) after the British and Hessian army‘s retreat of June 7." 3d

“Their marital spats were the stuff of legend on the eastern shore of Virginia. When the couple rode by the shore one day, John became so enraged at Fidelia that he drove their carriage straight into Chesapeake Bay. When Fidelia asked where he was going, John replied with a sneer,
‘To hell, Madam.‘ To which she retorted boldly, ‘Drive on, sir.‘”

😂🤣 John and Fidelia Custis were the parents of Martha Washington‘s first husband.

SamAnne I started reading this one last year and want to pick it back up. 3d
Amiable Isn‘t this a fabulous read? 3d
BarbaraJean @Amiable So far, there are areas where I wish he‘d restrain himself on the detail (I don‘t care about the particulars of every clothing order Washington sent off to London), but also, between my daily reading sessions, I find myself wondering how Washington is doing 😁 3d
Amiable @BarbaraJean I‘m kind of a geek —I like the extra details, which is probably why I gravitate towards Chernow. 😄 He made it very clear that Washington was a regular man with doubts and insecurities instead of perpetuating the mythical hero status that history seems determined to bestow upon him. I really appreciated that aspect when I read this. 3d
BarbaraJean @Amiable Yes! And the way Chernow emphasizes Washington's doubts, insecurities, and missteps also offers a view of how he grew and matured and changed--instead of springing on the scene fully formed as the “Father of Our Country.“ Seeing Washington's growth even just in the first 100 pages is one of the things that makes this compelling reading. 3d

Just finished chapter 2. I love a map especially in history books. A couple of whoa! moments already. First, a potential ancestor connection on my mother‘s side to the Virginia Lieutenant Governor and second, Washington lived because of a bullet that missed. How different our country‘s history might have been.

After extracting Washington‘s last remaining tooth, his dentist John Greenwood kept the rotted tooth as a keepsake and wore it on a key chain. 😳
