The Atomic Weight of Love | Elizabeth J. Church

A beautifully written book about a young woman who sublimates her own scientific ambitions in order to accompany her older “scientific genius” husband working in Los Alamos in the 1940s. There is some lovely nature writing in here as she continues to spend time watching birds in New Mexico. For all that this sounds like my kind of quiet thoughtful book, i struggled to connect with the protagonist and her timidity. Probably me and not the book!

squirrelbrain Great review - love the cover! 5d

This is so well done and I think anyone can learn from these. There are things crows do that remind me of humans. One thing I didn‘t know that crows are very good imitators (with sounds!). This series called “Science Comics” and is so good. This is the 2nd book I‘ve read in the series and they‘ve both been very good and I have learned things! The illustrations are also very well done, including images of a couple of things in their actual size.

Crow Planet is an incredible reminder that humanity exists within the world alongside the wilderness rather than separate from it. A very interesting read that provides a realistic outlook on the state of nature around us.

Terrific. Shockingly, the MoFos are dying, the result of their screen addiction. Mother Nature always wins. Told by a crow (ST), this is one of the best books I‘ve read in 2023.

Stocking up on candles by ordering early so that I can set the mood when reading my spooky October books this fall. Between these and my #HauntedHollowSwap #HHS23 shopping, I'm really getting in the Halloween mood. Is it October yet?

ShelleyBooksie The brain one is cool and disturbing at the same time. 8mo
CuriousG @ShelleyBooksie definitely! My husband has a brain injury, so I'm partial to things that are brains. We even have a brain cake mold 😄 8mo
CuriousG @ShelleyBooksie we use dark humour to express our affection for functioning brains...and understanding for ones that don't want to cooperate (which definitely includes mine) 🙃 8mo

This was more memoir than I wanted. I don't doubt the author's experiences or the impact of mental health problems, but I wasn't aware that this was how the information about crows was packaged in this book. I did not finish, got to chapter 6. Two stars because the info on crows that was available is good.

First book I read from my Christmas haul, I was not disappointed! I came for the corvids and stayed for Haupt's insight into the urban wilderness, which she teaches is no less "nature" than a national park, but one with different rules. This book is a good way to mourn what the world is losing in its ecosystems while encouraging you not to give up. TW: occasional non-graphic descriptions of harm to animals.

Kristin_Reads I found this one so interesting! Crows intrigue and make me nervous at the same time. 1y
SammyKat It's fascinating! I don't know if crows ever made me nervous, but I always thought ravens were the better bird. I have a new respect for crows now! 1y
