Mama's Work Shoes | Caron Levis
post image
Pickpick

I don't know too many kids who do not do this: walk in their mothers' or father's shoes. This girl, though, decided to hide the shoes her mother's uses to go to work because she is left behind at Nana, and she wants to be home with her mom. #ISpyBingoNov @TheAromaofBooks

The Tree and the River | Aaron Becker

This picture book is wordless and it is perfect the way it is. The stunning artwork shows how the world revolves and changes around a tree as well as the cycle from birth to death of a tree. Just beautiful. It reminded me a lot of Shaun Tan for some reason.

Ghost Mountain: Roman | Ronan Hession

Ghost Mountain, by Ronan Hession (2024)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Premise: Life for a small community is changed when a mountain suddenly appears in an abandoned field—but not as much as one might think.

Review: Hession has been one of 2025‘s great discoveries for me, but this one didn‘t quite live up to expectation or to its fascinating premise. ⬇️

Mattsbookaday Some have called this a contemporary fable, only I can‘t quite figure out what its lesson would be. There is little in overall plot, even as the characters‘ stories proceed at breathtaking speed. And I think that‘s the point? It‘s far from being bad and I certainly recommend it, but it‘s one that I think will remain a bit unsettled for me. 3mo

Book #9 of 2025: “The Scourge of God” by SM Stirling. I was reallly into this series when I was younger but got behind during/post college. I picked this up at a used bookstore in Florence over the winter and loved it. Time to get the rest of the series!

The Blue House | Phoebe Wahl

Such a beautiful story about a son and his dad who have to move from their favorite blue house. It showed all the faults with the house that they loved and how they made their new home loved just as much as the blue house. Wonderful graphics.

Americans have always been in transition.

This is a reread for me. I'm in a transition state of mind since my mom died last November (2024).

#CoverStories Day 27: This story definitely reminds me of summers either spent with family in the US or in the Philippines. I especially liked this statement: “We go to a house that‘s not any of ours, near the ocean and a #lake.”
