The #WomensPrize shortlist is out! What do you all think? I‘m really disappointed that #RemoteSympathy didn‘t make it, I enjoyed it the most. #TheSentence is also great, and #GreatCircle is definitely a masterpiece, although I didn‘t enjoy it as much as I hoped it would. #TheBreadtheDevilKnead is also not to my taste. I haven‘t read the others.

squirrelbrain I got 3 right on my list, although I‘m claiming 4 as the Shafak was 7th on my list! I too am disappointed about Remote Sympathy. My least fave on the shortlist is the Ozeki, I just didn‘t love it. (edited) 2y
TrishB I didn‘t even finish Remote Sympathy! Need to read some more though as only read 2 on shortlist. 2y
jlhammar I'm pretty pleased with it. Four of the six I was hoping to see here made it. The only one I haven't read here is The Bread the Devil Knead so planning to give that one a try before the winner is announced. I agree, it's a shame Remote Sympathy didn't advance. I would have swapped Great Circle for Remote Sympathy or Build Your House Around My Body. 2y

TheKidUpstairs I decided not to read the full long list, I was waiting for this and now I'll dive in! 2y
JillR None of the ones I‘ve had chance to read so far have made it to the shortlist! Now is that an excuse to buy more books?! 2y
thewallflower0707 @TrishB Why didn‘t you like it? 2y
thewallflower0707 @TheKidUpstairs Smart Choice, though I would really recommend adding Remote Sympathy to the list too! I thought it was very special. 2y
thewallflower0707 @Squirrel oh no, Ozeki sounds cool, why didn‘t you like it? I definitely want to read Shafak‘s book! 2y
thewallflower0707 @JillR Definitely, treat yourself! 2y
TrishB I didn‘t like the writing style or the characters- thought Greta just came across really stupid and naive. It generally came across really unbelievable. I did give it 150 pages but I guess it wasn‘t for me. 2y

LA Times Book Prize winner! This brilliant and disturbing book knocked my socks off! Creepy aspects of the plot turned done readers off, leading to mixed reviews. So happy to see the book getting the recognition it deserves! #thriller #bookawards

The longlist for the #WomensPrize has been announced today! So far, I‘ve read The Sentence and I own Great Circle, so there is definitely a lot to discover here for me ☺️.

#bookprizes #bookawards

jlhammar Same here! There are a few on here I hadn't yet heard of. I've only read The Sentence, The Book of Form & Emptiness, The Great Circle and Opal & Nev (listed in order of preference, The Sentence being my favorite). 2y
marleed The tagged is now one of my favorite books ever! 2y

Schlinkles I‘m about halfway through 6y
Whimsical.Curiosity @Schlinkles how is it so far? 6y
Schlinkles @Whimsical.Curiosity The writing is great, the subject matter is pretty depressing, but I‘m curious to see how some things tie together eventually. 6y
See All 24 Comments
DGRachel I‘ve read Warlight and I have From a Low and Quiet Sea checked out from the library currently. 6y
Whimsical.Curiosity @Schlinkles I'm not sure I could handle depressing. Report back on how you feel about it then you're done 😁 6y
Whimsical.Curiosity @DGRachel what did you think of Warlight? 6y
DGRachel Meh. I mostly kept waiting for the point. If I hadn‘t listened to it on audiobook, I would have bailed. The audiobook narrator had a really nice voice, though, so I kept listening just for that. 6y
Whimsical.Curiosity @DGRachel gotta love a good narrarator. 6y
Schlinkles Will do 👍🏻 6y
KellyHunsakerReads I finished Warlight and liked it a lot. I also read From a Low and Quiet Sea and loved it! I am now listening to snap. 6y
Reviewsbylola No, but The Mars Room is on my TBR. 6y
Redwritinghood Just finished Snap and was so-so on it. Starting From a Low and Quiet Sea next. 6y
Whimsical.Curiosity @Hunsakermountain what did you like about them? I'm hearing mixed reviews. 6y
Whimsical.Curiosity @Redwritinghood I heard there was drama about Snap. 6y
KellyHunsakerReads The Ryan book is a beautiful character portrait which I always love. The Ondaatje book is beautifully written and quite literary. The themes are really well explored. I didn‘t love The English Patient but this one was really good. 6y
Redwritinghood @Whimsical.Curiosity I can believe that. After reading it, I‘m not sure why it made the list. 6y
Whimsical.Curiosity @Hunsakermountain good to know, thank you! 6y
Whimsical.Curiosity @Redwritinghood that's what everyone said! What about it begins to question it's list making? 6y
Redwritinghood @Whimsical.Curiosity There is nothing there that distinguishes it from the others in that genre. There is no complexity in the plot and no themes relevant to our times. It is not a bad book. The writing is solid and it has a satisfying ending, but it‘s just nothing special either. 6y
bobregina Not yet, but I‘m for Overstory and the Mars Room. Very excited! 6y
KellyHunsakerReads I finished Snap and completely agree with @Redwritinghood 6y
Whimsical.Curiosity @Redwritinghood ah ok gotcha, makes sense. 6y
Whimsical.Curiosity @bobregina niiiiiice! I'm gonna try both of those. 6y

This year, the Golden Man Booker Prize will put all winners of 50 years of Man Booker back under the spotlight, to discover which of them has stood the test of time.

Five judges have been appointed to read the winning novels from each decade of the prize: Robert McCrum (1970s); Lemn Sissay MBE (1980s); Kamila Shamsie (1990s); Simon Mayo (2000s); and Hollie McNish (2010s).

Their shortlist will be announced on May 26.
