I attempted to find a new or "like new" copy as a birthday present for a Revolutionary War buff in my life. However, this 1983 "like new" #Folio arrived with writing inside. It's helpful commentary but still, written in. I guess I just *have* to find another copy and keep this one.... ?

Jess_Read_This @Lizpixie For real! The slip cover is super worn on the edges and it has that slightly musty old book smell- that I can usually get rid off based on an trick a librarian taught me. But I can't gift it with the writing. Personally, I'd be thrilled by the writing, but my uncle not so much. 😄 7y

Jess_Read_This @Lizpixie Amazon Marketplace. I've had some misses lately. My Alma Classics edition of Tender is the Night arrived with pink paint stains on the cover! Definitely not in the description... 7y

Lizpixie Have you ever tried abebooks.com They're very good, the prices are reasonable and they give a very honest description of the condition of the books. Every book I've gotten from them has been in great shape, @elkeo and also I think @Laalaleighh is a fan and they're very picky about their books. 7y

elkeOriginal @Lizpixie abebooks has many/most of the same sellers. The site was also bought by Amazon so many use both to list used copies. Overall I have had good luck but not always. It's good to be cautious anywhere on the damn interweb. 😕 7y

Jess_Read_This @rubyslippersreads Sure! She has been a librarian for +30 years and uses cheap kitty litter (she said buy the super cheap kind) and pour it in a plastic tub with a lid. Place the book on top, close the lid, leave for a few days and the smell is gone. She swears by this and it worked for me! 7y

Jess_Read_This @elkeo @Lizpixie I did get lucky with my "like new" Folio of Redcoats and Rebels. That Amazon seller was a joy to work with. I haven't tried abebooks for Folios, but I have seen mutual listings there and on Amazon. It's like playing "Book Roulette" 7y

elkeOriginal @rubyslippersreads @Jess_Read_This Kitty litter is magic from the gods! Clean litter, I should say. I heard a sock of litter can help defog your car windows too. Though that fact was mentioned on tv because a guy was mistakenly arrested for drug possession because the cop thought the sock was actually full of crystal meth...still useful info 😹😹 (edited) 7y

I bailed temporarily on my used copy (from bookstore) of The Casual Vacancy because it turns out it reeks of cigarette smoke 🤢. Or I'll just donate it back and keep my eyes (and nose!) open for another copy. 7y

rubyslippersreads @ValerieAndBooks I've had trouble finding cheap kitty litter. I thought it would be easy to find Jonny Cat, but so far I can only find fairly expensive crystals, etc. My cat uses the wood pellet type, which is very cheap; maybe I'll have to steal some of his. 😹 7y
