Archie Vol. 1 | Mark Waid

Pickpick

After reading the intro about how writer Mark Waid and artist Fiona Staples are huge fans of the old Archie Comics, I knew I was in for a treat. They didn't update it with a bunch of cell phones and F-bombs, they kept it creatively true to the beloved characters we know and love. 😊🙌🏻

P.S. This is also my #allagescomic entry that completes my #readharder challenge. Yay! So I'd say that's good reason for 🍾🍾😁

Rachbb3 I love that they didn't "update" it. Keeping it true is so much better. 6y
Donna_sBookMinute That's good to know. 6y
UwannaPublishme @Donna_sBookMinute 😊👍🏻. I'm looking forward to Volume 2. 6y

Umm, this was not for me. I gave it a try to meet a reading challenge #allagescomic knowing full well that the only comic I ever really liked was Archie (and a friend introduced me to some Neil gaiman that were cool). This one did not change my mind. It's had great reviews here and the concept of empowered women in an empowered Girl Scout type camp is cool, but confirmed that I'm just not a comics person.

Cinfhen Totally agree! 7y
Ms_T At least you gave it a go 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 7y
Blaire @Ms_T yes, trying to stretch myself a little with these challenges, and it didn't take up much time. 😊 7y

I'm not typically a graphic novel reader but chose this for my #allagescomic, so far, so good, and the characters appear to be #youngamericans and strong female characters. #septembowie

Trying to catch up with a few of my remaining #ReadHarder categories.

Njálla by Rozi Hathaway is mainly-image-based #allagescomic, based on a myth of the Saami people. An arctic fox, which brings the Northen Lights, needs help getting home from a young girl and her pet reindeer. The artwork is quite lovely - I suspect it would be more impressive in print.

I'd struggled with this category, but found this on small presses: http://bit.ly/2wwZOj6

rockpools I'd be interested in reading some own voices novels of Saami people, so have also stacked this for now: 7y
Cinfhen Same! I have a bunch of random boxes in 3 or 4 challenges still left to complete....oh god, I thought I had more time 😩yikes! 7y
rockpools @Cinfhen It's OK! WE STILL HAVE 4 MONTHS! Almost! It's the first time I've done year-long challenges- #blamelitsy - and I might have been a little over enthusiastic back in January, but I've definitely read amazing stuff I wouldn't have found otherwise. 7y

A fun, beautifully illustrated, fast-paced comic. I was confused for much of it (not being a comic reader) but appreciated the strong protagonists (12 yr old girls), smart, sometimes wrong dialogue - showing the 1980s era - and detailed pictures. The fantasy & inventiveness took me back to my youth, but it's unlike anything I read when I was young. #ReadHarder #allagescomic

The one where it rains, Charlie Brown floats away on a pitcher's mound and Snoopy heads for Wimbledon 🎾

This was 3am insomnia reading, but it still makes me smile. And I might just admit defeat and use it for my #readharder #allagescomic, even though it's a re-read - it's definitely a comic strip & for all-ages, so I think that covers it?? (Definitions 😬)

Will switch it I find something new & exciting further down the line.

Princess Princess Ever After has a lot of positive things going for it. It challenges gender norms in a way reminiscent of Tezuka's Princess Knight. It boldly constructs a very cute romance between the two female protagonists. Unfortunately, it has issues that made it a less than awesome experience. O'Neill seems to have a difficult time creating a story plot, so the narrative is rambling and shallow.

How did I not know about this sooner??? My brother recommended it for the @bookriot #ReadHarder challenge for the #allagescomic and I LOVED it!! I've already downloaded volume two but I have a few other things I wanted to finish first. And, just because he decided to do this while I was writing this post...please ignore his nerve-induced over-grooming bald spot!
