tournevis @JacqMac To tell the truth, I don't think it ever really was “what it used to be“, but it's become commercialized and about financial gain for the institution more than for creation of knowledge. It was always about hoarding knowledge from those who can't pay to sit in the chairs, but now it simply is more mercantile than ever. 5y

Eggs As an adjunct professor, I can relate 5y

tournevis @Eggs I am so sorry. adjuncts are so important and so exploited. It breaks my heart. We finally successfully won that adjuncts could become permanent positions after two years and get benefits. That was just a few years ago. But we have a union here. I know for a fact most US colleges and unis do not. 5y

tournevis @JacqMac I know. It was hard in the 1990s because departments simply weren't opening positions, but when they did, positions were tenure track. Today, in my department, there is one adjunct or teaching fellow for every professor. 5y

End of project packing. The box, the microfilms, the CDs and three short offscreen piles will go into storage. I also need to take the 12012 photocopies out of the filing cabinet. The shown piles are going to uni for teaching. Now to tackle the project carts, one shown. Oof. #academiclife

I took a huge decision today, with likely repercussions on my career. I have decided to stop trying to make the monograph I've been working on for 10 years work. I've officially stopped working on it. I will be publishing one more article from this research, after which it's shelved for good. It doesn't work. It's dragging me down. I need another monograph to become full professor but it won't be that one. Next project is ago. #academiclife

Tamra It must be a relief to be making a decision on a new direction! 5y

tournevis @Tamra It is, but it's a risk. It takes at least two years to right a book, and before that research. That's at least three years before I can even apply for full professorship. Pushing back everything. 5y

Going to uni, for the dreaded MA defence and hopefully for checking if my machines work in the bigger auditorium I'm assigned. It's been in use every time I was on campus this last six months. I also need to look at the campus bookstore to find where they keep the texts I assigned and look into library reserves. First class on 5 Sept. #academiclife #train
