Hey, I'm on a train! Taking a break from writing lectures (I hate the Seven Year War! I hate talking about the Deportation!) And looking out to a nice brisk day. #trainlife #academiclife

DivineDiana Lovely! 2mo
tournevis @DivineDiana Splendid out today. 2mo

Honest Academic Job Listings. So true, it'll make you cry. The history ad (shown) is about my current position to a tee. I am gleefully NOT doing the job they hired me for, by the by.

JacqMac 😂 So true. My husband is an associate professor. Academia is not what it used to be. 2mo
tournevis @JacqMac To tell the truth, I don't think it ever really was “what it used to be“, but it's become commercialized and about financial gain for the institution more than for creation of knowledge. It was always about hoarding knowledge from those who can't pay to sit in the chairs, but now it simply is more mercantile than ever. 2mo
rachelm Wow this is sooo true lol 2mo

Eggs As an adjunct professor, I can relate 2mo
tournevis @Eggs I am so sorry. adjuncts are so important and so exploited. It breaks my heart. We finally successfully won that adjuncts could become permanent positions after two years and get benefits. That was just a few years ago. But we have a union here. I know for a fact most US colleges and unis do not. 2mo
tournevis @rachelm It is! 2mo
Eggs @tournevis ❤️👏🏻❤️ 2mo
JacqMac @tournevis True. But it would be really nice to have the security of tenure again. It‘s such a rarity in some departments. 2mo
tournevis @JacqMac I know. It was hard in the 1990s because departments simply weren't opening positions, but when they did, positions were tenure track. Today, in my department, there is one adjunct or teaching fellow for every professor. 2mo

End of project packing. The box, the microfilms, the CDs and three short offscreen piles will go into storage. I also need to take the 12012 photocopies out of the filing cabinet. The shown piles are going to uni for teaching. Now to tackle the project carts, one shown. Oof. #academiclife

I took a huge decision today, with likely repercussions on my career. I have decided to stop trying to make the monograph I've been working on for 10 years work. I've officially stopped working on it. I will be publishing one more article from this research, after which it's shelved for good. It doesn't work. It's dragging me down. I need another monograph to become full professor but it won't be that one. Next project is ago. #academiclife

Tamra It must be a relief to be making a decision on a new direction! 2mo
tournevis @Tamra It is, but it's a risk. It takes at least two years to right a book, and before that research. That's at least three years before I can even apply for full professorship. Pushing back everything. 2mo
Leftcoastzen Hard decision! Those tomatoes look so yummy! 2mo

Crazeedi A hard decision to make, 10 years of your work, but sometimes we have to walk away from things we have invested blood, sweat and tears on. Best of luck finding your perfect topic, I'm sure whatever it is you will score and attain your dream! 2mo
batsy Tough decision but I hope it brings some peace of mind. All the best for going in a different direction 🍅💪🏽 2mo
CarolynM If you know it's not working there's no point throwing good time and effort after bad. I wish you all the best with your new direction😘 2mo

For those who may wonder if I'm in a reading slump. I'm not. I'm in an academic reading overload and will be for a few more weeks still until I settle into a class writing/teaching rhythm. Gah! #academiclife

🔹MA, passed and the candidate knows he is lucky to have passed.
🔹Body, exhausted.
🔹Brain, barely braining.
🔹Train, ONE HOUR LATE!
#academiclife #train #sigh

julesG Oh, busy but successful day. Safe trip home! 2mo
tournevis @julesG If my train comes, sure. Still not here! Now 1h40 minutes late. 2mo
julesG No! I hope it wasn't too much longer until the train arrived. 2mo

tournevis @julesG The trip back took four hours rather than 1h45. 2mo
julesG 😱 So sorry for you. Hope you had enough reading material with you. 2mo
tournevis @julesG I wrote classes. 2mo
julesG That's what I used to do on my bi-weekly 4 hour commutes. 2mo
tournevis @julesG Ish! This semester is twice weekly 1:30 to 1:45 each way. It's fine when all are on time. More than that and I'm floored. 2mo

Going to uni, for the dreaded MA defence and hopefully for checking if my machines work in the bigger auditorium I'm assigned. It's been in use every time I was on campus this last six months. I also need to look at the campus bookstore to find where they keep the texts I assigned and look into library reserves. First class on 5 Sept. #academiclife #train

@julesG 😂 No, the thesis I'm judging is quite bad and on the other side of the Atlantic. @jo.ca.no 's is undoubtedly very good.

Honestly, this thesis! Ths candidate's shallow understanding grates, and their unsophisticated word choice is becoming an issue. He just called a character stupid. Ouf. Defence Thursday. #academiclife
