Broken: A Novel | Daniel Clay

Pickpick

Finished this on the last weekend before heading back to school. The story of a group of people from different backgrounds whose lives converge in unexpectedly tender and devastating ways. I enjoyed this read, but wasn‘t a fan of the ending. The writing was fresh and interesting, especially considering it was a debut.

AmyG Omg what a reading spot! Have a wonderful school year. 😘 53m

A brutal, unflinching dive into the psyche of a teenage boy unraveling amid the violence and neglect of Yokohama‘s slum. Stark and relentless, it‘s a haunting portrait of innocence lost and a society in decay, and pretty well written too.

Taking some liberties with the syllable pattern today.

Today's compliment:
"I'm not embarrassed by
anything you wear, Mom."

High praise from my almost-16-year-old.

We do not care if husband steps right over folded sheets and towels sitting right there on the stairs to be brought up. We will call him out on it anyway to which he will reply that HE DIDN‘T SEE THEM!

JenlovesJT47 It‘s a sort of blindness a lot of men seem to have!! 😆😅😅 2mo

dabbe @JenlovesJT47 @AmyG @CBee @Deblovestoread @lil1inblue @Lesliereadsalot As a teenager, my nephew, after being told 100 times to take the trash out, took it out in a harumph. The bag broke as he was walking. He stepped over the mess and placed what was still there in the trash, walked back, stepped over the mess, and went into the house. My sister went apoplectic. His reply? “You only told me to take the trash out, and that's what I did.“ #teenagers 2mo
JenlovesJT47 @dabbe I swear, it‘s a very contagious disease!! 😅 Several men in my immediate family have it and they are not expected to make a full recovery! 😕😂 2mo

KadaGul I think this kind of blindness and annoying behavior is a common occurrence in the Male Gender. I'm surprised it's not biological 🤣🤣 2mo
Lesliereadsalot @KadaGul I thought his cataract surgery would help but apparently not. 🤣 2mo
Bookwomble I nervously add a (neurodivergent) man's view, which is that objects may appear in my perceptual field as general obstacles to be navigated as I move towards my target area and so can be avoided, but they won't necessarily impinge on my awareness as specific objects of interest to be interacted with. (And, no, my wife doesn't accept this as reasonable either! 😄) 2mo
Lesliereadsalot @Bookwomble Thanks for that information, it‘s good to know. I like knowing there might be a reason for this behavior! 2mo

The Long Walk | Stephen King

This is one of my favorite of King's books. I can't wait to see the movie this September.
Set in a dystopian America, 100 boys are chosen for the long walk, where they walk until only one is left. If they stop, if they try to leave, if they are too injured to continue, they are shot dead. Ray has signed up to be in the walk. How far will he get? It's so bleak but so engaging 🖤

This was fantastic! A young teen meets her father for the first time when she goes to spend the summer with him in the brownstone he‘s renovating. They navigate language barriers and she feels like a major outsider in the neighborhood. Very sweet story.

I can see why this won the 2025 Printz! I LOVE this family! The artwork and text twist together in a completely organic way and I adore both. Almudena‘s summer living with her father and slowly expanding her friends and family is masterfully woven into the renovation of her father‘s brownstone. All of the characters are unique and have their own moments of growth on and off page. I love all of them.

I enjoyed it so much! It was a perfect way to start the year and provided a real eye-opener into the lives of people in Jamaica.

The book does an amazing job describing Jamaican life, food, scenery, and settings. And the food! It had me salivating, I could almost taste it all!
