June #BookSpinBingo! I completed 11 books this month, and I was most satisfied to make it through Ulysses on schedule for the #SandCoUlysses centenary read. I also truly appreciated the message of Tenant of Wildfell Hall (with #PemberLittens) although it was kind of a tough read in places as well. I also stayed on track with the #BibleBuddyRead so we‘re now officially halfway through our yearlong Bible read!

✅ Completed! June 16 is the day on which Ulysses is set & I did manage to read it between February 2 (date of publication & Joyce‘s birthday) & today along with the Friends of Shakespeare & Co centenary read! I won‘t say I completely enjoyed it, but I believe it is well worth the effort of reading. I found all the writing styles fascinating, was amazed by the allusions, and truly enjoyed parts of it. Happy #Bloomsday!

Daisey @JazzFeathers Thanks! I have Bible School prep this week, but hopefully after that I‘ll actually be able to get back to reading a few of Tolkien‘s letters again! 2y
JazzFeathers @Daisey I'm catching up at the moment. Just read the famous letter to Woldham yesterday night, the one where Tolkien told about the Silmarillion. Alwayscan emotion 💚 2y

tpixie More James Joyce! 2y
Daisey @tpixie Yes, but I‘ve decided I need to read all Joyce‘s work in print. 2y
tpixie @Daisey yes to learn more about Stephen Dedalus, I listened to and it was hard - print would‘ve been better 2y

As I get closer to finishing Ulysses and Bloomsday on June 16, I want to share the resources I‘ve used alongside my reading. My favorite websites are the Ulysses Guide, now available as the tagged book, and The Joyce Project. I listen to every episode of the Friends of Shakespeare & Company Read Ulysses podcast, both audiobook & explanatory Bloomcasts. I‘ve also listened to most of the Reading Ulysses episodes and some of the U22 episodes. ⬇️

Daisey The U22 podcast is still in progress as another centenary read by Catherine Flynn who is publishing the Cambridge Centenary Ulysses edition with essays, notes, maps, and photos later this year.

Yesterday I found the Censored podcast episode about Ulysses, which specifically discusses how the book was officially and unofficially censored/banned in different countries. ⬇️

Daisey I‘ve listened to a few episodes of Blooms & Barnacles by Kelly Bryan as well as the Re:Joyce podcast by Frank Delaney, but these are both a bit much to keep up with and harder to jump in and out of as I have time or find a section of the book about which I want more explanation. I prefer those listed above that have episodes for specific episodes/chapters of the book. ⬇️ (edited) 2y
Daisey My print copy of Ulysses is the Alma edition with annotations by Sam Slote, Marc A. Mamigonian, and John Turner. I was recommended the Shmoop study guide which I‘ve referenced some as well. https://www.shmoop.com/study-guides/literature/ulysses-joyce/summary

If you have other great resources for Ulysses, please feel free to comment and add them to this list.

Graywacke Impressive. One day I will read this…🙂(and then I will need all these resources). 2y
Daisey @Graywacke I‘ve put in a lot of extra time and effort, but it has made my reading so much more worthwhile! 2y
JazzFeathers It sounds like this was quite the undertaking. 2y
Daisey @JazzFeathers Yes, but I don‘t think I would have appreciated or enjoyed it without the effort, and I have enjoyed sections of it. Some books deserve that, and I think this is one that does. 2y
JazzFeathers I'm happy to have your experience to refer to. Maybe, one day I'll read it too, the way you did 😁 2y
Daisey @AnneCecilie These are some of the other resources I used while reading Ulysses this year. 1y
AnneCecilie Thanks for the tag. Seems like a lot of additional sources are necessary 1y

I‘m working this week to make progress and catch up on this centenary read of Ulysses. This evening that includes some pages of Eumaeus in the hammock.

I‘m diving into the middle of the long Circe episode of Ulysses with the podcast from Friends of Shakespeare and Company alongside a simple supper tonight. This episode is written in the style of a play script, and the audio by multiple readers is a great way to listen along. Also, even with my pre-reading prep and explanatory podcasts, this episode is crazier than I expected.

JazzFeathers I'm really enjoying reading your updates on Ulysses 😜 2y
Daisey @JazzFeathers Thanks! I don‘t know that I‘m going to end up thinking it‘s amazing like so many, but for the most part I‘m enjoying the journey and appreciating the work and thought that went into writing it. 2y

Daisey @MatchlessMarie Yeah, it‘s been on my list for a while, and then I picked it up on an Audible sale. Seems like a good change of pace for this next week. 2y
