For the #readafrica2022 #sierraleone I chose this title. As a society of humanity we have to do so much better. The fact I knew he had a happy ending to his journey (and happy as in he‘s still alive and living a life he has well earned) allowed me to read the whole memoir. This is another if he could live it I could read it and acknowledge his journey with my heart breaking. @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB @Texreader

Librarybelle Good choice! 2y
BarbaraBB Stacking! 2y
Texreader I just finished it too. Letting it settle before I write my review. Nicely done 2y
KristiAhlers @Texreader I totally get the let it settle. I did the same. As a grown woman I do t think I would‘ve had the strength to do what this child had done. I‘m so glad he made his way here and is living the life that he is. 2y
Kitta I read this years ago! It was so interesting! 2y

For #readafrica2022 #Ghana I downloaded this one and let me tell you I was hooked right away. With plenty of twists this is a solid mystery/suspense read. Loved the cultural elements that truly pull you into this world! #travelthroughbooks @BarbaraBB @Librarybelle

Librarybelle I‘ve got this one on my to read list! 2y
KristiAhlers @Librarybelle I think you‘ll really like this one. Different but good. 2y

For #readafrica2022 representing #Madagascar I picked this novella length read. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ read. This may be one of those books that things go missing with translation. This is only the second book from that island that‘s been translated from a local. His descriptions of the island is what kept me reading @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB @Texreader

BarbaraBB I‘m sorry this was an underwhelming book. I am planning to read this one for Madagascar 2y
KristiAhlers @BarbaraBB you may like it. I can‘t truly put my finger on why it didn‘t speak to me. Wasn‘t a horrible read. 2y
Librarybelle Novellas are a hit or miss for me - I guess I‘m more of a longer novel reader. 2y
KristiAhlers @Librarybelle I think I‘m that way too. Sometimes they work but for the most part I want to sit down and dig into a good story. Which requires way more words. 2y
Librarybelle Yes! So true! 2y

I chose this memoir for my #readafrica2022 to represent #rwanda. Two sides to every story. Well, in this case Hollywood‘s version and this memoir written by a survivor of the genocide. At times heartbreaking and horrifying his words stand as witness to his experience. If he could live through it and write about it. I could read it. @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB

BarbaraBB This must be a tough read 2y
KristiAhlers @BarbaraBB very much. I had to set it aside a few times. But I told myself if he could live through that I could read about it at least. 2y
Librarybelle 🔼Very good perspective 2y

For #readafrica2022 and for the country of #Egypt I selected this one. I have to say this wasn‘t what I thought it was going to be like. This ended up being a wonderful read and I found myself captives by the writing style and the characters. #travelthroughbooks @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB

IuliaC I read this one a very long time ago and I remember I loved it 🤩 2y
KristiAhlers @IuliaC I loved it too. I‘m going to go and look at his backlist as I love his writing style 2y
IuliaC Exactly, it's his writing style. I read a couple of his books and enjoyed them all (By the River Piedra I Set Down and Wept, Eleven Minutes, The Zahir, Love) 😊 2y
Librarybelle Great choice! 2y

For #readafrica2022 I picked this one representing #Tanzania. This author is an automatic buy and I loved how he brought the Tanzanian landscape to life while at the same time telling a page turning story about a kidnapping gone wrong. Book is populated by a lot of characters so that can get confusing at times as each character has his/her POV. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ @BarbaraBB @Librarybelle #travelthroughbooks

Librarybelle I‘m excited to read this one! 2y
KristiAhlers @Librarybelle I brought this one with me the past weekend. I did a quick road trip up to Wisconsin to see my best friend. This one kept me very entertained 2y
Bklover I like his books too, but haven‘t read them all yet Hope you had a good visit! 2y

KristiAhlers @Bklover I did. It was so nice to get out of the area. Have some wine, catch up. It was a much needed break. And as for this guys books I think this might be one of his I like the best. 2y
Librarybelle Awesome! 2y
BarbaraBB Good choice! The author is on Litsy, did you know that?! @ChrisBohjalian 2y
KristiAhlers @BarbaraBB I did not! How cool is that? 2y

For #readafrica2022 I selected this title representing #Belgiancongo #thecongo. I have to say I spent a few chapters yelling at the book. A few chapters crying and the whole book cringing as several times it was extremely uncomfortable. Which I guess is why it‘s a controversial read. In any event this country came alive for me through her descriptions and the characters. #travelthroughbooks @BarbaraBB @Librarybelle @Texreader

Librarybelle I‘ve yet to read this one, but I‘ve heard others describe all of the emotions they get from this one. 2y
KristiAhlers @Librarybelle it was good but I wouldn‘t read it again. It was actually a draining read emotionally if you know what I mean. 2y

I‘m borrowing daughter‘s dorm room wheeled cart (she‘s now home from college for the summer) for my challenge reads. With her immense amount of help, we organized and updated my fave books bookshelf (in the background). Then we pulled out my IRL challenge books for #readingafrica2022 (top of cart) #foodandlit2022 and #litsyatoz and put them on her cart. I decided to throw in a couple of my Wilbur Smith books for Africa because, why not?

Nute Nice! 2y
KristiAhlers Nice! I love organizing books. Or bullet journals or just about anything. I just visited my local bookstore and came away with a couple more reads for the #readafrica2022 challenge. I‘m going to be away for the weekend but I‘m hoping to get some reading done will traveling in the car. Total perk of being the passenger! 2y
Texreader @KristiAhlers Oooh! Post what you bought! What countries? I‘m so excited! 2y

This was such a very good read. Written in broken English, it‘s the story of a 14 yr old girl who so desperately wants to go to school to learn to be a teacher. Instead she‘s married off by her cruel father. I learned so much about this culture and this country through this book. #readafrica2022 #Nigeria #travelthroughbooks @Texreader @Librarybelle

Librarybelle This is on my to read list! 2y
KristiAhlers @Librarybelle oh you‘re going to love it. I loved how it was written in broken English. Truly adds to the experience of the story. 2y
Texreader I‘m so glad you loved it too and you‘re kicking off your readingafrica challenge. You picked a good one to start. I highly recommend I Am A Girl from Africa next. Super inspirational 2y
KristiAhlers @Texreader oh. Ok great. I‘ll download that one now! Thanks for the suggestion! 2y
