Pickpick

Like her Cree mother & grandmother, 10-year-old Shelly can see the ghosts of people & animals. She is learning how to catch them & help them move on. But tragedy strikes and Shelly must learn something even more challenging: how to handle grief. A gentle contemporary ghost story by a Ililiw/Cree author, for ages 9-12. #CanadianAuthor #Indigenous #kidlit

This appealing picture book about gender stereotypes is well-suited to its audience: children from preschool through to Grade 2. Author/illustrator Elise Gravel received the Rights and Freedoms Award in Quebec for “raising awareness & popularizing complex & sometimes taboo subjects among children.” Gravel worked with trans educator Mykaell Blais to create Pink, Blue and You! #CanadianAuthor #kidlit

A picture book biography of William Carlos Williams with a focus on his inspiration for writing the poem “The Red Wheelbarrow.” Chuck Groenink‘s muted art beautifully captures early 20th-century life in New Jersey. Perfect for children in elementary school. #kidlit

Enjoyed reading about Dr. King though his son‘s eyes. The challenge & inspiration of MLK Jr ‘s message shines through. Recommend for grades K-2. Be prepared to discuss violence civil rights activists were forced to endure. #5stars #kidlit

#SundayFunday @ozma.of.oz
I didn't read much as a kid. These two books that come to mind. I had surgery at Shriners Hospital when I was 7 years old. I think I was hospitalized 5 days. During that time, I had my mom read these two books aloud over and over again. She would ask "can't we read something else?" I guess these were my comfort reads, I didn't want to read anything else.

ozma.of.oz I loved introducing my nibling to The Monster at the End of This Book! Thank you for sharing! (edited) 2w
marleed Ohh, so sweet. And I hope you fully recovered from your childhood illness. I just last week introduced my grand twins to the Monster at the end of this book. The love it! 2w
sblbooks @marleed Thanks! I have cerebral palsy. The surgery was successful to improve my mobility. The Monster at the End of This Book was so funny. I'm glad your grandkids enjoyed it! 1w

Buffy Sainte-Marie says writing the song that has been made into this picture book was like “taking photos with my heart of the things that I see on the reserve.” Cree-Métis illustrator Julie Flett has contributed her gorgeous collage artwork. Sheet music is included at the end. This book is a celebration of nature and community, and a treasure for readers of all ages. #Canadian #Indigenous #kidlit

LeahBergen Oh, I love that artwork! 2w
Lindy @LeahBergen In the notes at the back, Sainte-Marie and Flett say that they wrote and illustrated this book while in Alberta. 2w

Pickpick

In this gentle picture book for children, the topic of death is viewed in a nontraditional way. Sheila Heti‘s text focuses on metaphysical questions and the interconnectedness of everything on Earth. Esmé Shapiro‘s watercolour, gouache & collage art creates a dreamy, magical setting. #Canadian #kidlit #AllAges
