Read this one over a week ago and forgot to post about it.
I was surprised by how intense the story was. I figured it the subject matter would have been toned down a ton for younger readers, but we still ended up getting the serious weight of that battle. It was a great book.

Absolutely loved it. The HBO series doesn't give these men enough credit for their bravery sacrifice and sheer will to survive. Read this book and you'll have a new appreciation for what our armed services did in WW2.

Prompt: BREAD

Takes us to a small village in Normandy during WWII.   We follow Emma, her family, and the village as they live under the restraints of German occupation.

Emma's role in helping to save the residents was to bake “bread” for The Kommandant and his men every day.

Follows the Sherwood Rangers, a British tank division from D-Day through the end of WW2. Holland is clearly well researched as he tries to introduce us to as many of the men as he can. Unfortunately, so many died that by the time a new solider is mentioned, they are killed. It‘s an awesome attempt at telling the stories of many soldiers who‘d otherwise be forgotten. But I was left with a new appreciation for the bravery of WW2.

Finally finished this solid book on WW2 history from a British pov. Invasion on first few days was best. After it up to the liberation of Paris was harder to deal with but still good.

I'm reading an account of D-Day by a British author. I liked his book on Stalingrad.

This is a thorough account of D- Day by WWII expert historian Ambrose. But it‘s so hard to focus and remember what I‘ve heard!!
Heading to Normandy this September & trying to brush up on WWII- instead of just the cider and cheese 🧀

I liked the author‘s narration a better than the many primary source quotes he used to illustrate (and expand on) the things he was talking about. Partly, that may have been the smaller font of the quotes vs my eyes! I sometimes skimmed over some of those quotes. But the amount of detail and research that went into this is amazing. Very much like Cornelius Ryan‘s account of D-Day as a whole (published in 1959).

Bluebird This sounds great. Stacked! I read the Cornelius Ryan book years ago and liked it a lot. 13mo
LibraryCin @Bluebird, Cornelius Ryan is also referenced in this book. That one was a 5 star read for me when I read it, as well. 13mo
Bluebird @LibraryCin i read The Longest Day long before I started rating books, but it made a strong impression—probably would have been 5 stars. Lol. I planned to re-read it. I think I‘ll read this one first. 13mo
tpixie I‘m planning to take my husband to Normandy this Fall, so I‘ll have to read this. Im currently listening to 10mo
