Entertaining writing, but still not sure what the point of this book was.

Taking a break from my #MusicalMemoirs for this #ProcrastinationBook6 / I‘m using this for #ReadingAsia2021 #Oman - I‘m still missing a few cities 🤫

Megabooks I did not like this. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 13mo
Cinfhen It‘s a TOTAL sell out but I‘m using it for my #ReadingAsia21 challenge @Megabooks and it‘s actually background noise while I prepare dinner & fold laundry 13mo
Librarybelle At least it makes good background noise 13mo
Cinfhen Absolutely!! Still haven‘t gotten to #Oman yet @Librarybelle but there was a section about #Bhutan 😁 13mo

White Mountain is a meandering book on all sorts of Himalayan stuff: Tibetan death rituals, history of invasions, human physiology of altitude, and lots of mountain climbing. The (lack of) structure should drive me insane, but I oddly enjoyed it.

The author travels to #Bhutan in her early 40s and meets and marries a Buddhist artist.

This became better as it went along. At first the writing was too basic and simplistic, and more about the author than the country. However, we soon start to learn about the customs and people of Bhutan and it became much more interesting. The Bhutanese ways of thinking and viewing the world around them are particularly fascinating.

My #ReadingAsia2021 map‘s looking slightly more colourful this month - but still a LONG way to go!

#Bhutan - A Deluge of Consequences
#India - The Private Life of Mrs Sharma
#Nepal - The Gurkha‘s Daughter
#Singapore - The Black Tides of Heaven
#Philippines - Bone Candy

I actually enjoyed all of these! I think this takes me up to 21 countries in total, so almost half-way. Ah well.

TrishB Looks good 👍🏻 1y

Thank you for posting about this yesterday @Butterfinger .

A short read looking at a project in #Bhutan to lower the levels of glacial lakes in the the high Himalayas that are at risk of bursting and causing loss of life downstream. Because of the difficult location and conditions, the work had to be done manually- no heavy machinery, no explosives… A very human, very tense story of climate change, and those on the frontline.

Librarybelle Thanks to you and @Butterfinger for this one! Stacking! 1y
Butterfinger It reminded me so much of In Thin Air with the workers fighting altitude sickness and frostbite. I'm glad you liked it too. 1y

This short book is impactful. Because of the melting of glaciers, floods occur in the kingdom of #Bhutan. To control the high waters, people trek to high passes in the Himalayas to pump water with only basic tools just to lower the levels a few feet a year. It amazes me to learn what other people have to do to survive in this world.

I couldn't find it on the database, but it is only $2 on Kindle.
