Popovic was part of the movement (Otpor) that ousted Milosevic from power in Serbia, and this book is a handbook of sorts—taking principles from Otpor and discussing how those principles could be applied in a variety of contexts, using nonviolent activism and resistance to effect change. The wealth of examples he offers are inspiring and often hilarious. I can‘t help but wonder if the Portland Frog was inspired by this book… ⤵️

BarbaraJean (Cont‘d) I read this with an online book group over the summer, and I‘m so glad I did. The final session was a discussion with the author—rich with relevant and practical ideas for our current context in the USA. 15h
JamieArc I read this years ago when it first came out and I think about it all the time. I think it‘s been the book I recommend most these days. I, too, thought of the connection between Portland and this book. I‘ve been hoping someone would get into some creative protest! 11h

#5JoysFriday

Another fantastic birthday week.

1) My brother and I gift books on our birthdays. Last year he brought me two books from Switzerland, both of which I already had. This year he brought me KL and was sure I hadn‘t heard of it. I had to tell him I just finished Book 2. He asked where I heard about it and said from my Litsy family. His response was “I hate those people”. 🤣 I am thrilled to have a physical copy.
2) Guilty pleasure ⬇️

Deblovestoread 2) books that were half price and with a b‘day gift card 3) Dr. Seuss fabric from a quilt shop visit today and lunch with my fellow August b‘day friend 4) Fantastic book choice from @TheBookHippie with a beautiful journal, bookmark and tea 5) Another fantastic book from @AmyG with a reading journal and sticker. I am so grateful for my Litsy friends. ❤️ (edited) 2mo

There‘s a lot of talk these days about getting 3.5% of the population involved in a protest. But why? And how?
I‘m trying to learn more about how nonviolent resistant world and (why) 😉

Today is the 35th anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The current administration is minimize resources, funding, & supports to the disability community. The disability community is tired but will keep fighting as they always have for their rights. The disability community won‘t go silently. Disability rights are human rights. Disability rights are civil rights.

ncsufoxes PBS is also currently has a few movies/documentaries about the fight for the ADA & other individuals in the disability community on line. 3mo

I follow Lauren Grubaugh Thomas‘ Substack, A Soulful Revolution, and today‘s piece was hopeful and encouraging to me, as I feel somewhat at a loss over effective action in the face of current events. I‘ll link her piece below. She highlighted the tagged book and an upcoming series of online book discussions, if anyone‘s interested in joining in. I just put the book on hold at the library! Links in comments ⤵️

TheBookHippie I‘ve been preaching this for decades . Yes we have to protest. No that‘s not enough. ✊🏼 wonderful article. Hopefully more people wake up. 3mo

Spotify set me up with an "Angry Running List," which taught me that I still enjoy Rage Against the Machine as much or more than I did in my feisty 20s, but now I cry at the lyrics.

It also taught me that, despite my conviction to the contrary, I apparently don't hate ALL Foo Fighters songs.

#tuesdaytunes @TieDyeDude

BarbaraBB I used to love Rage too and still do whenever I hear them. Quite timely 🤦🏻‍♀️ 4mo
BarbaraBB Also Foo Fighters has been growing on me 💕 4mo
PuddleJumper Rage Against still hits that spot for me especially when I'm out walking. Foo Fighters are a bit hit and miss. I have a screamy walk playlist which is a lot of emo, punk, and rock lol 4mo
lil1inblue I love Rage far more at 45 than I did at 15. In fact, my Tom Morello crush didn't start until my 30s. 😂 4mo

I learned so much about protest movements that happened in my lifetime that I was unaware of.

A solid read. Cole takes three issues—marriage equality, gun rights, & civil/human rights (particularly after 9/11)—and explores how they were addressed through activism and lobbying. I learned a lot from this; the NRA‘s role in changing the 2nd Amendment‘s interpretation, for example.

Cole maintains a nonpartisan perspective throughout, presenting the facts clearly and giving us a glimpse at what it takes to make change happen.
