The harrowing, utterly original debut novel by Uzodinma Iweala about the life of a child soldier in a war-torn African countrynow a critically-acclaimed Netflix original film directed by Cary Fukunaga (True Detective) and starring Idris Elba (Mandela, The Wire). As civil war rages in an unnamed West-African nation, Agu, the school-aged protagonist of this stunning debut novel, is recruited into a unit of guerilla fighters. Haunted by his fathers own death at the hands of militants, which he fled just before witnessing, Agu is vulnerable to the dangerous yet paternal nature of his new commander. While the war rages on, Agu becomes increasingly divorced from the life he had known before the conflict starteda life of school friends, church services, and time with his family, still intact. As he vividly recalls these sunnier times, his daily reality continues to spin further downward into inexplicable brutality, primal fear, and loss of selfhood. In a powerful, strikingly original voice, Uzodinma Iweala leads the reader through the random travels, betrayals, and violence that mark Agus new community. Electrifying and engrossing,Beasts of No Nationannounces the arrival of an extraordinary new writer.

Pickpick

This is a short novel, but don‘t let that fool you into thinking it‘s an easy read. The ravages of war are a universal theme. What is most jarring is this oxymoron of a child soldier. As if children are not capable of doing what they have to in order to survive. How is Agu any different than other soldiers during war, expecting them to blindly follow orders, then return to normal once it‘s all “over?” This book is yet another that stays with you.

AshleyHoss820 This was my read for January #BookSpin ☺️ 2y
TheAromaofBooks Great progress!! 2y
AshleyHoss820 @TheAromaofBooks Thank you! The Nix is slightly over 600 pages, so I knew I needed to finish it before the semester starts on Monday! 🤣 2y

My first #BookSpin and #DoubleBookSpin ever! A couple of year‘s ago, I deleted my GoodReads TBR…and then built it back up to an astronomical height. 🙄 The Nix is the longest-standing book on my GR TBR, so it will be nice to cross it off my lists! 🍀🍀🍀

TheAromaofBooks LOL I commented on your earlier post before I saw this notification - apparently you had no problems finding the numbers!! 😁 I added you to the tag list, too!!! 2y
AshleyHoss820 @TheAromaofBooks 😂 I have so many friends who do this every year, so I followed the breadcrumbs back to you! 😊 2y
erinreads I absolutely loved The Nix! Hope you enjoy it. 2y
AshleyHoss820 @erinreads I‘m glad to hear that because I‘m really looking forward to it! 😊 2y

A difficult read, I'm not sure I read this at the right time for me. But it is very well written, I think at a time when I'm in a less sensitive head space I may return to better appreciate this work.

#Booked2019 - Soldier's story

Cinfhen I agree, sometimes I read a book knowing I‘m not in the right head space to fully appreciate. 4y

My thinking is like the road going on and on, and on and on, until it is taking me so far far away from this place. Sometimes I am thinking of my life far far ahead and sometimes I am thinking of all the life I am leaving behind...I am also thinking to myself that both of them are looking so peaceful and beautiful like how we are looking before the war, like how we are being after the war, but not like now. Now we just be looking like animal.
