Pickpick

Utterly bleak, award winning YA novel translated from the Danish. A group of fourteen-year-olds set out to prove to one of their classmates that the world/life does have meaning, with devastating results.

Mehso-so

This was a very short read that I used as a palate cleanser this week. It was shockingly dark but it didn't blow me away as I was expecting. A group of school kids trying to find what really carries meaning in life turns into a twisted tale about greed, power, and the scary possibilities that arise in fundamentalist beliefs. It's clearly YA, and I would've enjoyed it more if it had gone into these issues more in depth.

Page one of Janne Teller's brilliant, provocative YA book about meaning. One kid says #nothing matters so his classmates set out to prove him wrong. A quick but thought-provoking read. I highly recommend! (Although it is a real love-it-or-hate-it book.) TW for rape.

Zelma I don‘t think I‘ve ever hated a book as much as this one. I have a handful of despised books but this takes the cake for me. 6y
merelybookish @Zelma Ha! Proving my theory! I read this book in a book club and then taught it a few semesters. Lovers and haters. Few in between. 🙂 6y
Zelma @merelybookish yeah, I don‘t think there‘s middle ground on this one! (edited) 6y

"If something's worth getting upset about, then there must be something worth getting happy about. And if something's worth getting happy about, then there must be something that matters. But there isnt!.. In a few years you'll all be dead and forgotten and diddly-squat, nothing, so you might just as well start getting used to it!"

This #thoughtprovoking YA novel from Denmark was a favourite of mine to teach since it provoked a lot of debate.
One day, a kid climbs into a tree and starts taunting his classmates that "Nothing matters." The other kids go on a mission to prove him wrong.
It's a quick, unsettling, and at times, disturbing read that asks: What matters? What is meaningful?

Pickpick

I loved this book. Theres something horribly dark and twisted that rests within these pages. It reminds you that children are yes pure and innocent but they do not always know how to handle that purity that they represent and it's very possible that they can easily fall the other way.

So frustrating to be in a reading slump right when litsy comes out for Android omg. I just haven't been able to get myself to read much more than 20 pages at a time. I've mostly been crafting lately. I should really find an audiobook. Do you have a riveting audiobook recommendation for me?? #knitting

britt_brooke Beautiful photo! 📷 Reading slumps are frustrating. When I'm struggling, I usually go for something light and funny. 8y
MrBook Hmmm, you can give "The Goldfinch" or "Middlesex" a go. If you like non-fiction, "Unbroken" is great. ? 8y
CarolynOliver Beautiful knitting--is there a name for the pattern? On books, maybe comics or a graphic novel (Saga!) or poetry? I've read tons of great poetry this year (Ocean Vuong, Monica Youn, Patricia Smith). 8y

JessieHeninger I agree with @britt_brooke light and funny when I'm stuck. My favorites for that are Gail Carringer books, especially "Soulless" 8y
read_diverse_books I don't read many audio books, so can't recommend any right now. But I hope you get over your reading slump soon! For now, keep crafting and enjoying yourself 😊 8y
BookHermit Have you read The Passage trilogy by Justin Cronin? I listened to the third instalment and really enjoyed the narrator. Lots of "bang for your buck" as they are all quite long. Donna Tart narrates The Secret History and it's fantastic. 8y
sarielizbeth I crochet and listen to audiobooks while my kids sleep. Some of my favorites have been the Outlander series, the Lord of the Rings, Sherlock, or PG Wodehouse. I like to do both listening and working with my hands because it keeps me completely engaged. 8y
Larkken ❤️ the lace work! Very detailed and such a lovely color. I've been in a knitting slump, myself 😂. I pick out audio books from the library pretty much at random lately, but I love books where the author exams their own (Gaiman does this, as does Tina Fey), and certain narrators (Dick Dale is soo good in HP and the Night Circus, as is the narrator for artemis fowl), or any BBC 4 versions of anything are great! 8y
ehewett88 I listen to audio books on my walk to work and love listening to autobiographies as they are usually spoken by the author. Loved Stephen Fry's the fry chronicles 8y
readordierachel Shrill by Lindy West and Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates were great in audio. Each was read by the author. 8y
annahenke If you're looking for something magical, go with The Night Circus. If you're into historical fiction, go with Circling the Sun by Paula MacLaine. Fantasy: Uprooted by Naomi Novik. If you've read all these: go with #hiddengem 8y
TheBooktrovert Spooky reads for October.... pick up Nos4atu on audio as read by the amazing Kate Mulgrew. 8y
StephanieY Been listening to Cutting Season for a while (just going slowly) and I really like it! 8y
Heather_Reads I just got The Dispatcher by John Scalzi from Audible - it's free until November 2 (but I don't know if that's a worldwide thing). I haven't listened to it, but the story sounds kinda cool. 8y
OutlandishLit @CarolynOliver it's called Haruni! You can find for free on ravelry. And comics are a great idea. I may or may not have an enormous stack I need to catch up on 8y
OutlandishLit @BookHermit havent read the passage yet! That's a good idea bc large paper books intimidate me haha 8y
OutlandishLit @TheBooktrovert kate mulgrew!! She was my hero in star trek as a kid. I'll check it out 8y
