Knitting Yarns: Writers on Knitting
Knitting Yarns: Writers on Knitting | Ann Hood
26 posts | 8 read | 1 reading | 13 to read
In this lovely anthology, Sue Grafton, Barbara Kingsolver, and other authors go public with their passion for knitting.People magazine, four stars The impressive collection of writers here have contributed essays that celebrate knitting and knitters. They share their knitting triumphs and disasters as well as their life triumphs and disasters. . . . These essays will break your heart. They will have you laughing out loud.Ann Hood, from the introduction Why does knitting occupy a place in the hearts of so many writers? Whats so magical and transformative about yarn and needles? How does knitting help us get through life-changing events and inspire joy? In Knitting Yarns, twenty-seven writers tell stories about how knitting healed, challenged, or helped them to grow. Barbara Kingsolver describes sheering a sheep for yarn. Elizabeth Berg writes about her frustration at failing to knit. Ann Patchett traces her life through her knitting, writing about the scarf that knits together the women shes loved and lost. Knitting a Christmas gift for his blind aunt helped Andre Dubus III knit an understanding with his girlfriend. Kaylie Jones finds the woman who used knitting to help raise her in France and heals old wounds. Sue Grafton writes about her passion for knitting. Also included are five original knitting patterns created by Helen Bingham. Poignant, funny, and moving, Knitting Yarns is sure to delight knitting enthusiasts and lovers of literature alike.

Tagging @hes7 @jari-chan @twainy I couldn't do the collage; I don't know why.
@lindy I'd like to see your latest creation.

I like to graph designs and knit them. This was the first time I did it. I have improved since this one. Thanks for the tag @TheSpineView

My WIP.
Some of the stories were pretty good. Nothing really jumped out at me. But it‘s nice to read about one of my favorite pastimes.

I‘m working on this suuupeer cute cowl with little sheep and an alpaca on it! Any other knitters out there? What‘s your favorite knitting related reads? I‘m sick AGAIN so I‘ve got lots of down time. #knitting

ElenaBaer Wow !! I am impressed. I don‘t knit and I don‘t think I can. Although I am only in my 40s I have arthritis in my hands. (edited) 6y
tracycatherinereads @ElenaBaer Oh, that sounds painful. 😕 Does Advil or anti-inflammatory meds help? 6y
ElenaBaer I try not to take anything. I do my best to stay away from salt which makes it worse. On really bad days I have compression gloves. 6y

Another thing I tried knitting at 3am last night! It‘s funny how sometimes you try something harder and it turns out better than the easy pattern you were working on before? Excited to turn on an audiobook and get this one done :)

peaKnit @rustoryhuf I'm planning on a Reagan sweater, it's one piece, swingy, and has a lace pattern in a part of it, I'm usually a sock knitter, so we will see😊 7y

I'm not sure why it took so long for me to finish. I loved many of the stories in this one. There were a couple that didn't do it for me but that is to be expected in a short story collection. And the beautiful fingerless mitts were made for me by my daughter. Seemed fitting for this photo.

This book of essays about knitting makes me want to put down my reading and go knit! Not sure that's a good thing...as I said earlier, the Barbara Kingsolver is glorious, and it was nice to "meet" people like me who can't watch TV without busy hands. So kindred souls!

Woolfwomyn

So far the book is lovely, but Barbara Kingsolver alone is worth the price and more. The alchemy, chemistry, botany, and poetry all knit together... "pronking gambol of newborn wildhooray"--such beauty!

I haven't been reading lately because I've been knitting up a storm: I'm starting my third baby blanket since August (knitting for a cause, not babies of my own) and I enjoyed several essays by knitting writers in this collection. Wide variety of themes and points of view.
