I‘m with Flashman on the 1842 retreat from Kabul of the British Army. He is really is a terrible person but one does get a good feel for the historical situation reading this book.

First installment of the "memoirs" of Harry Flashman, notorious bully of Tom Brown's Schooldays. Flashman is a coward, a liar, a toady, and an all-round whoring blackguard which makes his exploits irresistible. Fraser's pastiche of late-nineteenth idiom is pitch-perfect and this is fun-packed read as well as being the most enjoyable kind of history lesson.

Flashman is the classic creep. I've posted an image from the 70's bbc series that i remember and Tom Browns schooldays was one of the books that was part of my childhood reading loves. So then i discovered George macdonald fraser's brilliant revisiting of school bully Flashman who despite incredible cowardice seems to come out on top - reminds me to revisit the series soon.
Not as good as I remembered. Then again I'm not finding misogyny in any form amusing lately. Probably the wrong time to reread this book considering today's political climate. I'll give Flashy his due at a later date.

For me the ultimate #antihero is Harry Paget Flashman, the bully from Tom Browns School Day who goes onto be the greatest hero of the Victorian era. So he is a hero right? No he is a coward and a cad, a man for whom no vice is to low; murder, adultery, betrayal of trust, thievery, slave trading, yep all of these and more, while participating in the greatest events of his time. Despite it all you find yourself cheering for him #octphotochallenge
The Flashman series is a must read if you love well researched historical fiction and do not mind anti-heroes. Flashman was the school bully in Tom Browns Schooldays and was a coward, womaniser, and all round disreputable human being. This series tells how he becomes a great Victorian hero.
Be forewarned: This is an accurate portrayal of what English colonialism looked like. The narrator is casually racist, sexist and no HSUS member. There is free use of "N".
That said, it's hell of a read, at turns both ghastly & hilarious. And our anti-hero freely admits he's a contemptible ass.
Flashy gets a letter from home.
I've never been fond of the Greek heroes either. Odysseus is the worst of the lot: a violent, lying, scheming, thieving, philandering butt.
Some brash opening paragraphs. What makes the bad boys so irresistible?
