Some Assembly Required
Some Assembly Required: A Journal of My Son's First Son | Anne Lamott, Sam Lamott
3 posts | 8 read | 9 to read
In Some Assembly Required, Anne Lamott enters a new and unexpected chapter of her own life: grandmotherhood. Stunned to learn that her son, Sam, is about to become a father at nineteen, Lamott begins a journal about the first year of her grandson Jax's life. In careful and often hilarious detail, Lamott and Sam-about whom she first wrote so movingly in Operating Instructions-struggle to balance their changing roles with the demands of college and work, as they both forge new relationships with Jax's mother, who has her own ideas about how to raise a child. Lamott writes about the complex feelings that Jax fosters in her, recalling her own experiences with Sam when she was a single mother. Over the course of the year, the rhythms of life, death, family, and friends unfold in surprising and joyful ways. By turns poignant and funny, honest and touching, Some Assembly Required is the true story of how the birth of a baby changes a family-as this book will change everyone who reads it.

💕 💕 Anne Lamott
🥴 I‘m kind of glad I‘m not her child or the mother of her grandson. Sacrilegious, I know. She‘s a wonderful person & has taught me so much about humor and faith, but she is a NERVOUS NELLY!
💖 I appreciate how honest she is about her desire to be so involved in her grandson‘s life. She can be a loving & helpful presence but she can also be very overwhelming. She owns that & reminded me to check my own actions with my family.

AmyG I love Anne, too. While I haven‘t read this one...yes, it‘s not easy to stand back and let your child raise their child without all of your input. 🤣 3y
Suet624 @AmyG 🤣🤣 I don‘t offer a lot of opinions but I‘m always surprised that my daughters don‘t ask for it. Then I remember that I never asked my mother for her opinion on anything, so...karma. 3y
AmyG Ha. Exactly. 3y
Centique That‘s so interesting to hear. I‘ve been meaning to read a Lamott book about motherhood - maybe that one on my TBR is about having her son? This will be interesting too. My MIL likes to get hyper involved in her grandkids lives but luckily for me her daughter‘s kids bear most of the brunt of it 😂😂 3y
Suet624 @Centique Hahaha. I have liked every book I read by Anne Lamott. Whichever one you have I bet you'll enjoy it. 3y

(or Grandchildren) 🤣 Anne Lamott has been talking to me today through this book and providing some powerful reminders. Thanks to science and vaccines I finally was able to spend half a day with Gracie May yesterday.

In the last week I had a sleepover with Grace‘s brother (Captain Adorable) and then a half-day visit with Leander, a friend‘s son I babysat for three years. It‘s been a great week.

KathyWheeler I love Anne Lamott and need to read this book. 3y
Suet624 @KathyWheeler this book is particularly relatable if you are a grandparent. 3y
KathyWheeler @Suet624 I am. I have an 8 year old granddaughter. ❤️ 3y

If you‘ve had a baby come into your life, you know what Sam, Anne Lamott‘s son, is talking about. I had four children and I just never could deal with that umbilical cord stump.

BarbaraBB Haha I recognize that! And each day it became more offensive 🤣 until it finally could be removed! (edited) 3y
MicheleinPhilly Have either of you seen the episode of Sex and the City where Brady‘s falls off and Miranda‘s cat steals it and starts playing with it? Always makes me laugh. @BarbaraBB 3y
BarbaraBB @MicheleinPhilly Gladly I missed this episode 🤣😱 3y
MicheleinPhilly @BarbaraBB It‘s kind of gross but also hilarious. She calls her ex to come over and deal with it like it‘s a mouse in her kitchen. 🤣🤣 3y
Suet624 @micheleinphilly @BArbaraBB Oh gosh. Even the thought of it makes me queasy. I am definitely Team Miranda on this. And yes, Barbara, each day it just gets more offensive. Disgusting. It's funny how no one ever tells you ahead of time about that gross-out feature of a newborn. 3y
