Juice | Tim Winton

Juice, Winton has said, means human resilience and moral courage, and there is that in spades in this complex, riveting book already being hailed as a masterpiece. SYDNEY MORNING HERALD A hold-your-breath adventure set in an utterly plausible, sun-hammered future, JUICE will stab your conscience and break your heart. EMMA DONOGHUE A searing but essential look at Earth after the human-induced apocalypse. Too real to be true. Too true to be real. BOB BROWN Two fugitives, a man and a child, drive all night across a stony desert. As dawn breaks, they roll into an abandoned mine site. From the vehicle they survey a forsaken place middens of twisted iron, rusty wire, piles of sun-baked trash. Theyre exhausted, traumatised, desperate now. But as a refuge, this is the most promising place theyve seen. The child peers at the field of desolation. The man thinks to himself, this could work. Problem is, theyre not alone. So begins a searing, propulsive journey through a life whose central challenge is not simply a matter of survival, but of how to maintain human decency as everyone around you falls ever further into barbarism.

Did very well yesterday on the 📕 front. The tagged 📕 I got at the op shop on my way home from rehearsals. I couldn‘t believe my luck that it was still opened & was a bargain at $5. The 📕 in the middle is from my building‘s 📕 swap from an author I‘ve enjoyed in the past & the top 1 was from a st library I discovered while heading to the pub last Sun so visited again yesterday. Was a massive day & I‘m still buggered today. Tempers flared at 🩰.

Jeg I‘m not a Tim Winton fan but this book was very good. Nice copy you have too. Hope your ballet wasn‘t stressful. 2mo

A future dystopian judgement of our lack of commitment to science and change. So close to home. So timely. So sad.

Wow! This book was amazing! Had me 100% hooked. I love Tim Winton but I was reluctant to read this one because I thought it might be too depressing. I‘m sooo glad I did read it! Set in a futuristic Australia where climate change has wreaked havoc and humanity is adapting in order to survive. Gritty and frightening the main character tells his life story to a suspicious stranger in order to survive. Well worth reading.

Next up. I don‘t normally read dystopian stories, but I do hear amazing things about Tim Winton‘s writing so we‘ll give it a go. (I also read/finished Mrs. Nash‘s Ashes for book club. 🙁 it wasn‘t what I was hoping it would be - a light read to calm my mind - it was light but it was filled with the toxic male behaviour and the women that scramble to love them and ruin their self-worth in the process.)

I am not a Tim Winton fan though I've read most of his books, hoping. I do love The Riders and I have kept a few editions . I loved this in parts for what Tim was saying . It frightened me . Moved me to action . But I can't say I enjoyed it. Way too long for me. A pick because it made me think and act.

LeeRHarry Another irl bookgroup read for me later in the year. Hoping for good discussion. 😊 8mo
Jeg @LeeRHarry I‘m sure you will get a great discussion. Looking forward to what you think. 8mo
CarolynM That‘s interesting you don‘t like Tim Winton. I thought all West Australians were obliged to 🤣🤣🤣 Seriously, though, I‘m not particularly drawn to reading him, although I did very much like 8mo

Holy 💩⚽️⚽️! Climate dystopian #ozfiction, written by a local #mustread author. Finished reading it today, a day that reached 43C 🔥, whilst hibernating in air con. Absolutely terrifying and affecting. This is Winton desperately trying to WAKE US UP. Read it… if you dare. #chunkster

LeeRHarry We will be reading it for my bookgroup next year. I think you must be sending your hot weather our way for Boxing Day! 🥵 9mo

squirrelbrain Great review! I bought this when it came out over here (October) but the chunksterishness was putting me off - sounds like I need to bite the bullet and dive in. 9mo
Jeg I‘m not a big fan of his , my favourite being The Riders. I‘ve got my name on the list at the library to borrow. Though maybe I‘ll get it for Xmas. I‘m definitely going to read it sometime. Maybe it will go on my shelf next to The Riders. 9mo

Winton is a must read author for me and I devoured this. The dystopian landscape is set in Western Australia around the location of Exmouth, where my parents lived for 29 yrs. What is particularly confronting and frightening is that it stated in a review that everything he writes about is a likely climate science scenario. It‘s based on scientifically accepted and understood evidence and models. A Sobering and chilling thought. 4.5⭐️ #Ozfiction

MrsMalaprop I‘ve gotta get on it! But I have to read Garner‘s latest first. 9mo
Rissreadswithcats @MrsMalaprop Whet! Garner has a new book?!?!?!? How do I not know this? 🤦🏼‍♀️ Googling now! 9mo
