I loved this book. James goes to Edinburgh to study to become a doctor. There, he gets into enough financial trouble that he starts body snatching with Aneurin and his gang for the surgeon he's studying for. And then they run into Burke and Hare 🖤

The Resurrectionist, by A. Rae Dunlap (2024)
Premise: A naive member of the gentry arrives in 19th C Edinburgh, excited to jump head on into the vanguard of the new science of medicine, but is quickly drawn into the seedy realities required by his new passion.

This is good historical fiction with a bit of mystery set in Edinburgh during the era of body snatchers or resurrectionists.

I don't remember when I learned about Burke and Hare. I don't know if it was before or after I became interested in resurrection men. But give me a book with both of these and I will read it.
The writing here feels of the time and the story of how James fell into the trade makes for compelling reading.

This was a recent impulse purchase that I couldn't resist because of the cover! 🤭
YA Coming of Age/Dark Academia Historical Fiction set in mid-19th century Edinburgh with a M/M romance sideplot
James Willoughby has recently decided to become a surgeon and to study at the University of Edinburgh. An excellent decision for the son of a noble family if it wasn't for the family lacking in funds. In order to afford his position in an anatomist's course, the resident resurrectionist Aneurin offers the naïve James a job... ⬇️
An excellent read based on how the early medical field behaved to learn about human anatomy and physiology.
For that this is fascinating and informative. I say *based* on history but this isn‘t nonfiction. Well-written with characters you can get attached to.
I highly recommend this for thriller fans and Pride month reads.
