Me, My Hair, and I
Me, My Hair, and I: Twenty-seven Women Untangle an Obsession | Elizabeth Benedict
18 posts | 12 read | 20 to read
Ask a woman about her hair, and she just might tell you the story of her life. Ask a whole bunch of women about their hair, and you could get a history of the world. Surprising, insightful, frequently funny, and always forthright, the essays in Me, My Hair, and I are reflections and revelations about every aspect of womens lives from family, race, religion, and motherhood to culture, health, politics, and sexuality. They take place in African American kitchens, at Hindu Bengali weddings, and inside Hasidic Jewish homes. The conversation is intimate and global at once. Layered into these reminiscences are tributes to influences throughout history: Jackie Kennedy, Lena Horne, Farrah Fawcett, the Grateful Dead, and Botticellis Venus. The long and the short of it is that our hair is our gloryand our nemesis, our history, our self-esteem, our joy, our mortality. Every woman knows that many things in life matter more than hair, but few bring as much pleasure as a really great hairdo."A terrific read for those of us who obsess about our hair. Or those who live with those of us who do. A collection thats, I dare say, a cut above the rest. Mary Morris, author of The Jazz Palace

I‘ve been on an essay kick lately because the collections have been so good. Overall this is a pick for me. I especially love how diverse the authors are. But it is a bit uneven.

A few days ago I greeted a visitor to one of my coworkers and helped her find her way to the right office. She was impeccably dressed, with a streak of bright purple peeking out from her perfectly cut and styled haircut. We bonded over our colors. 😀

This was an interesting #essay collection about ... hair. Hair in all its glory, trouble, and cultural implications. Arguments between mothers and daughters over hair. Going gray or not. And more!

Susanita Okay so I realized after the fact that this will also work for #diverseNF for #Booked2018 @Cinfhen @BarbaraTheBibliophage @4thhouseontheleft 6y
Cinfhen Awesome hair color and book sounds like a fun read!! 5y

So I just buzzed all my hair off (yay! Feels wonderful!) and I‘m wondering if any of you have read a novel where the protagonist is described as having really short hair. Any ideas?

RaimeyGallant Looks great! How about Rose McGowan's memoir? It's on my list. Also, did any of the protags have short short hair in Girl, Interrupted? 6y
RaimeyGallant There's an important female character in the last book I wrote who has a shaved head, but I haven't published it yet. :) 6y
tracycatherinereads @RaimeyGallant thanks! Yeah, I‘ve read a few anthologies that feature essays/short memoir about shaved heads. Trying to find some fiction though. Let me know when your book is published!! 6y

Just finished this! I genuinely enjoyed it and don't really understand why it has low ratings. There were a couple so so essays, but most of them I liked. Getting my own copy of this book is most definitely in the future!

MY BOOKS FINALLY ARRIVED! After two more visits to the Post Office (and hearing lame excuses) they arrived this morning. I'm sure @biblio_ginger will show you later on her account what was in the box for her too 😁😍. Having a readathon later this month definitely sounds like a must...where do I sign up?

biblio_ginger They have a Litsy account! @24in48 go Mandolin go! 😁 6y

eraderneely I was disappointed with this book. Maybe my expectations were too high, but there didn‘t seem to be much diversity. I felt like I was reading the same essay over and over. (With a few wonderful exceptions of course) 6y
EchoLogical @eraderneely Yeah, I keep seeing this same comment throughout the reviews I've browsed. I'm not sure if I'll read it yet. 6y
eraderneely @EchoLogical I mean, it‘s an essay collection, so you can just pick and choose which ones interest you 6y

I saw this one on a sale the other day, and snapped a screenshot, not only did it look interesting, but I knew it‘d be perfect for today!

Mehso-so

A fairly uneven essay collection. Probably not the best choice to read straight through for #24in48 ? Would've been better to read a few essays at a time between other books. Loved the diversity of the authors, though!

Back home, starting my hour 6 of the #24in48 readathon. I'm a bit behind because of my fantasy football summit, but I have nothing else tonight and only a few hours of work to do tomorrow, so it should be fairly smooth sailing the rest of the weekend. Wish me luck!

Taking a break from #24in48 for my annual Fantasy Football Summit. Everyone in my fantasy football league gets together to discuss rule changes for the upcoming season, but really just to hang out and grill and drink. It's the best.

ThatBookishGal Looking forward to football season!!! 7y

Ready to start my next #24in48 book, but Cooper here demanded some cuddles first. How could I say no to this face?! He's such a good boy.

Bailedbailed

On of the gifts to myself this year is to be more selective about my reading and permission to bail if a book no longer interests me. I have hundreds of books I want to read, and more being added every day. While this book wasn't terrible, I just found I had no interest in returning to it. So off it goes to the Little Free Library!

Bookworm-Bobbie I like this idea. There's so much out there to read there's no point in reading something that doesn't interest you! 7y
rubyslippersreads Giving myself permission to bail is one of my bookish resolutions this year. 😀 7y

This book was great! It was everything I wanted it to be & so much more! These writers share their personal stories & accounts related to their hair, varying from relationships to mothers/daughters/spouses, identity, role in society, illness, feminism, & so much more! It's amazing the things you do/don't think about in relation to hair. This book covers ALL types of hair. Very funny, uplifting & empowering. Definitely has lots to talk about!!

Switching it up as summer breaks comes to an end and I enter what is hopefully my final semester of grad school.

KrisConstantReader That looks like a really interesting book, let us know how it is after you've read it. 8y
Tav Ah the grad school home stretch! What a beautiful moment! 8y
ThatBookishGal @Tav NO KIDDING! I've been going PT for the past several years...I think I'm going crazy lol I'm so ready to be done 8y
ThatBookishGal @KrisConstantReader so far I like it!! I'm a naturally curly girl who fully embraced all natural curls/product a few years ago. Hair has always been a struggle! So I'm looking forward to hearing about others who have had their AHA! moment and learned to embrace their luscious locks 8y
