Self-Help (Revised)
Self-Help (Revised) | Lorrie Moore
7 posts | 22 read | 25 to read
The publication of "Self-Help" introduced readers to Lorrie Moore's refined blend of humor and insight, and made her one of the best-loved writers of her generation. These stories, told in a voice that is at once witty, melancholy, and bravely honest, paint a tableau of lovers and family, of loss and pleasure, desire and memory. From the young secretary who by day hopes someone will notice her Phi Beta Kappa key and by night makes love to a married man she met at a Florsheim shoe store, to the shattering of a marriage by the shores of a tranquil lake, "Self-Help" is a unique, enduring work of short fiction.

Pickpick

I picked up this short story collection on a whim, having never read Moore before. These are fantastic. So dry and witty and all within the theme of self-help, interpreted in many ways. I‘ll be reading more of her short stories for sure.

#VolumesAndVocals

Going a different way with today‘s #Royals prompt; a list of Lorde‘s favorite books, link below. Books are a good way to live a fantasy. The tagged book is one off it that‘s also on my TBR.

“And baby, I'll rule (I'll rule, I'll rule, I'll rule)
Let me live that fantasy”

Help!! I am in desperate need of a lovely gentle book! Preferably a novel. Looking for something beautiful and restores my faith in the world. Thanks for helping my mental health.

Lizpixie Have read the Garden Spells books by Sarah Addison Allen? They‘re a pair of very sweet magical realism books. 6y
LauraBrook Ugh, I‘ve so been where you are. Okay, for comforting reads, one of my go-tos is Peter Mayle. Fiction and non-fiction alike, they always soothe me. And I second what @Lizpixie said about SAA, they‘re always delightful books. Maybe rereading an old favorite would work too? Or L.M. Montgomery? Or D.E. Stevenson? I tend to enjoy books written in the 1930s. Angela Thirkell? Jane Austen? Bill Bryson? Alan Bradley? Jenny Colgan? Rhys Bowen? 6y

Lizpixie @LauraBrook yes! I second Jenny Colgan, she‘s so much fun to read as a cleanser. I also loved Molly McCrae‘s Plaid and Plagiarism, full of taciturn Scots and much snark. 6y
JanJan When I feel down I reread books I loved as a child. 6y
Weaponxgirl One of my comfort reads 6y
Liatrek I read this book this year and it was just right for me😊 good luck I know how nice it is to find a book that satisfies the soul ❤️ 6y
Ddzmini Sometimes a book that makes you laugh is also good for mental health so - Furiously Happy by Jenny Lawson is a good read 😋📖 6y
heikemarie You may enjoy this one if you haven‘t read it already. 6y
Hooked_on_books I listened to this one recently on audio and loved it. It‘s a great exploration of self, gender, and family. 6y

Next up in the lineup... essays! I haven‘t read many essay collections until recently and I have to say that I‘m loving the genre. Bite size stories that keep me coming back for more. 👍🏻😊

Many of Lorrie Moore's short stories are HILARIOUS, in a slow-burn, slightly dark, brilliantly witty sort of way. Moore is definitely my favorite short story writer—if you haven't read her yet, Self-Help is a great place to start (if a short novel is more your style, Who Will Run the Frog Hospital? may very well be my favorite book of all time!). #lorriemooreevangelism #funnybooks #augustofpages
