Swamp Story
Swamp Story: A Novel | Dave Barry
Pulitzer Prizewinning New York Times bestselling author and actual Florida Man Dave Barry returns with a Florida caper full of oddballs and more twists and turns than a snake slithering away from a gator. Jesse Braddock is trapped in a tiny cabin deep in the Everglades with her infant daughter and her ex-boyfriend, a wannabe reality TV star who turned out to be a lot prettier on the outside than on the inside. Broke and desperate for a way out, Jesse stumbles across a long-lost treasure, which could solve all her problemsif she can figure out how to keep it. The problem is, some very bad men are also looking for the treasure, and they know Jesse has it. Meanwhile, Ken Bortle of Bortle Brothers Bait and Beer has hatched a scheme to lure tourists to his failing store by making viral videos of the Everglades Melon Monster. The Monster is in fact an unemployed alcoholic newspaperman named Phil wearing a Dora the Explorer costume head. Incredibly, this plan actually works, inspiring a horde of TikTokers to swarm into the swamp in search of the monster at the same time villains are on the hunt for Jesses treasure. Amid this mayhem, a presidential hopeful arrives in the Everglades to start his campaign. Needless to say, it does not go as planned. In fact, nothing in this story goes as planned. This is, after all, Florida.

On the back of this book I received recently, it was blurbed by Steve Martin. He says this book is funny but he also says he hasn‘t read it yet but he loves it. I‘m so confused. Has he read the book or not? I want to read this book and give it a chance. I‘m just not sure if I‘m going to like it because of the humor and I don‘t know if I‘m going to understand the humor because it‘s set in Florida and I don‘t live in Florida. I live in Texas.

I feel I can count on Barry to be wild, wacky, and funny, and he certainly didn‘t let me down with his latest novel. Some craziness in the Everglades with a little skewering of social media thrown in to boot. I loved it!

vivastory Do you have a favorite Barry? I've been meaning to give him a try. 1d
Hooked_on_books @vivastory There‘s plenty of his I haven‘t read, but one that sticks in my mind was coauthored by him and is absolute ludicrous fun: 1d

Mehso-so

On the one hand, I‘m thankful for this book because I devoured it in one day and it got me out of my reading slump.

On the other hand, I‘ve forgotten most of the plot. And what I remember of the plot is meh. The dialogue and a handful of the characters were fun- but the rest of it is… the rest of it.

I do give Barry a nod for tying up loose ends and the dialogue in particular. Everything ended in a tidy little bow 👍

This novel was funny, violent, and so wonderfully bizarre. Loved the humor. When a plot comes crashing together with such a cast of crazy characters, you can't put it down.

This is a bonkers novel - absurd and delightful. It has a slow start, but once the shenanigans begin, this becomes a laugh-out-loud riot of a book. There are multiple stories that all converge in one section of the Everglades, with characters and plot tripping all over each other. Barry delivers a quintessential Florida tall tale, complete with gators, pythons, buried treasure, and so much more, and I am here for it all!

This was fun. You get many character viewpoints, and the book is very plot heavy. The plot is absurd in a believable way. There are good people and bad people and people in between. An easy, funny read.

Hooked_on_books I‘m really looking forward to this! My box should arrive midweek, so I‘m excited to get to it. 2w
ICantImReading I‘m excited to read this one, it seems like it will be so fun! 🥰 2w

I thought this was going to be my 1st Dave Barry, but discovered on Goodreads that I read the 1st book in his Peter and the Starcatchers series. This will be my 1st adult book by him.

CSeydel I can‘t wait to read this one! I haven‘t read his humor books, but his earlier novel, Big Trouble, was hysterical. 2w

Aardvark finally got me. I‘ve resisted all of their selections so far, but it‘s my birthday this month and I grew up in Florida and Dave Barry makes me belly laugh. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 🎶Happy (very early) Birthday to me🎶
