The Winter Sea - Dark Water Daughter
The Winter Sea - Dark Water Daughter | H. M. Long
8 posts | 5 read | 7 to read
A stormsinger and pirate hunter join forces against a deathless pirate lord in this swashbuckling Jacobean adventure on the high-seas. Launching the Winter Sea series, full of magic, betrayal, redemption and fearsome women, for readers of Adrienne Young, R. J. Barker and Naomi Novik. Mary Firth is a Stormsinger: a woman whose voice can still hurricanes and shatter armadas. Faced with servitude to pirate lord Silvanus Lirr, Mary offers her skills to his arch-rival in exchange for protection - and, more importantly, his help sending Lirr to a watery grave. But her new ally has a vendetta of his own, and Mary's dreams are dark and full of ghistings, spectral creatures who inhabit the ancient forests of her homeland and the figureheads of ships. Samuel Rosser is a disgraced naval officer serving aboard The Hart, an infamous privateer commissioned to bring Lirr to justice. He will stop at nothing to capture Lirr, restore his good name and reclaim the only thing that stands between himself and madness: a talisman stolen by Mary. Finally, driven into the eternal ice at the limits of their world, Mary and Samuel must choose their loyalties and battle forces older and more powerful than the pirates who would make them slaves. Come sail the Winter Sea, for action-packed, high-stakes adventures, rich characterisation and epic plots full of intrigue and betrayal.

This is another one I'm calling a soft pick.

I did enjoy it overall, but the pacing could have used some work, and the characters absolutely could have been fleshed out more. Nonetheless, the story was still compelling, and the magic system was intriguing.

I enjoyed it enough that I did pick up the second book, but I probably won't start it for a while.

I‘ve had this on my TBR for so long! I‘m glad I finally picked it up. A storm singer gets caught and sold to a pirate. It‘s then an adventure of different pirates on the high-sea. Mary doesn‘t know who to trust, but is hoping a certain pirate will help her find her mom. This appears to be a trilogy. I like the way it ended, so I will most likely continue and all the books are out!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
It took a bit for this one to fully pull me in, but once it did, I really enjoyed the ride!
This has multiple branches of a unique nature-based magic and pirates, pirate hunters, and a Navy all competing for the seas.
This is a complete story, but the end is set up for more adventures, and I'll definitely be reading book two.
Very fun fantasy adventure!

@Chrissyreadit I love my #nightmaremakerswap!! These are so beautiful, you said you are not artistic but …these are so fun and beautiful. I wanted to to take a million pictures to post all the details of these. Amazing! Thank you so much. I am looking forward to the book and putting together the bookstore!

@LibrarianRyan for hosting!

Chrissyreadit I‘m glad you like everything! The lantern is one of my favorite things we put together (my mom and I) so we made a version for our house too. 2y
LibrarianRyan Nice. I don‘t know what that thing is but it looks so cool. 2y
Chrissyreadit @LibrarianRyan it‘s a decoration- I made a scene under a plastic dome and a scene in a lantern. 2y

Apparently, fantasy set on the high seas where pirates, privateers, & navies duel in the known seas & beyond, their battles enhanced by people who can manipulate the weather and/or talk to magical creatures is my new jam. Great writing, fantastic world building, an intriguing magic system & some great characters make this brutal, seafaring adventure a really good read. The first book in a series, I look to reading more. On sale 7/23.

Picked up two books and three ARCs—one of which happens to be signed—on my walk yesterday. Starting the tagged book, described as perfect for readers of R.J. Barker (who wrote The Bone Ships series I fell in love with earlier this year) and Naomi Novik. This fantasy with pirates and Stormsingers, disgraced naval officers, vendettas and who knows what else comes out in July. Excited to see what it‘s all about.
