The Dream Builders
The Dream Builders | Oindrila Mukherjee
3 posts | 2 read | 7 to read
Mukherjee allows full life for these characters who are often real enough to remind us of ourselves, even as they betray one another. . . . even as they betray themselves. Jericho Brown, Pulitzer Prizewinning author of The Tradition Funny, moving, and often deliciously cynical. Tiphanie Yanique, author of Monster in the Middle After living in the US for years, Maneka Roy returns home to India to mourn the loss of her mother and finds herself in a new world. The booming city of Hrishipur where her father now lives is nothing like the part of the country where she grew up, and the more she sees of this new, sparkling city, the more she learns that nothingand no onehere is as it appears. Ultimately, it will take an unexpected tragic event for Maneka and those around her to finally understand just how fragile life is in this city built on aspirations. Written from the perspectives of ten different characters, Oindrila Mukherjees incisive debut novel explores class divisions, gender roles, and stories of survival within a society that is constantly changing and becoming increasingly Americanized. Its a story about India today, and people impacted by globalization everywhere: a tale of ambition, longing, and bitter loss that asks what it really costs to try and build a dream.

Pickpick

A novel told from 10 points of view of life in Hrishipur India. It begins and ends with Maneka, who has been living in America for many years and returns to India to be with her father after her mother passes. She plans to write a book about women‘s lives in India, or maybe the financial plight of the people there, or maybe the story of the housing market. The shift of her attention moves with the stories of the characters we follow.

Soubhiville A good first pick from #Aardvark and also my #Bookspin for March. Igor looking handsome in the background 😸💖💙 13mo

When @TheBookHippie posted that #aardvarkbooks had a $4 first book if you joined, I couldn‘t resist. Then with additional books being only $9, well you can see what happened. I‘ve been admiring all of your books for the last few months, and these were the ones that jumped into my first box. @Megabooks I‘m glad to see you liked this tagged one, it‘s a good sign I‘ll like it too.

Pickpick

Mukherjee captures the difficulties of a rapidly evolving India in this #aardvark pick that follows 10 characters tied to the city of Hrishipur. This is a solid pick, but I was hoping it would be a little more short story-like.

Maneka just returned from the States to a dad who lost their home and money to crooked developers. She meets up with a schoolmate who introduces her this rich people‘s playground. But some folks are unhappy about change.

Cinfhen Sounds promising 13mo
MicheleinPhilly I got this one from Aardvark too. Looking forward to it! 13mo
