Famous Last Words | Katie Alender
15 posts | 22 read | 28 to read
Hollywood history, mystery, murder, mayhem, and delicious romance collide in this unputdownable thriller from master storyteller Katie Alender. Willa is freaking out. It seems like she's seeing things. Like a dead body in her swimming pool. Frantic messages on her walls. A reflection that is not her own. It's almost as if someone -- or something -- is trying to send her a message. Meanwhile, a killer is stalking Los Angeles -- a killer who reenacts famous movie murder scenes. Could Willa's strange visions have to do with these unsolved murders? Or is she going crazy? And who can she confide in? There's Marnie, her new friend who may not be totally trustworthy. And there's Reed, who's ridiculously handsome and seems to get Willa. There's also Wyatt, who's super smart but unhealthily obsessed with the Hollywood Killer. All Willa knows is, she has to confront the possible-ghost in her house, or she just might lose her mind . . . or her life. Acclaimed author Katie Alender puts an unforgettable twist on this spine-chilling tale of murder, mystery, mayhem -- and the movies.

This is a solid ghostly whodunnit, I have to admit. I have read some recommendations saying that the only fully-fleshed character is the main character, but to that I have to pose the challenge: how deeply did you care to see into those around you as a teenager? Keeping that in mind, this is a pick.

I think I have truly outgrown this genre. More than half of the YA novels are just meh! to me. This one is no exception. I liked the blurb, but started skimming the book after the third chapter to just get to the basic plot.

Crazeedi That's rather a shame for the younger reader who may decide reading isnt all its cracked up to be😥 5y
marleed For me a YA gets my 4th star when I don‘t have to keep reminding myself to remove my well-worn mom hat. When I start thinking about that hat is when I‘m aware I‘m the wrong audience for the book. 5y
julesG @marleed It wasn't so much the "mom hat" (nice term), it was the teenage/high school blah that annoyed me. Sure, the interactions at school were important, but it was dragging. I'm obviously more of a fantasy and SciFi reader. 5y
Bklover @marleed I have trouble with the mom hat too! 5y
Chrys Adding myself to the mom hat club. Also don‘t like the ones where there is too much adult bashing in favor of the teens knowing everything 5y

Just started this YA novel. Picked it for the title and don't actually know what I'm in for.

So far, the MC has just arrived in her new swanky home in LA. Her new step-father is a Hollywood director. She finds her introduction to the glamorous world of expensive and shiny things strange.
Also, she murdered her father and tries to talk to his spirit.

This was the last book I read for the teen reading challenge. I enjoyed the mystery of who the killer was. The writing was definitely on a teen level but it still held my interest.

🌟🌟🌟🌟4/5 stars

I liked it. Katie Alender has this unique and personable writing style. I love her YA books. It's not 5 stars just because I don't feel such a deep connection and love for it that will stick around. But it's a fun read! 😊👍

BekahB I enjoy her books too! I thought her Bad Girls Don't Die trilogy was really good. I listened to them on audio and might do the same with this one. 😀 7y

Famous Last Words was SO good. It had mystery, romance, pain and so many other elements that make a book so great. Highly recommend it to anyone who loves a good ghost-serial killer-murder book!

"This is the kind of dream you don't wake up from, Henry" ... This book has caught my attention just from this one line. I don't know what it means yet, but I hope I find out soon!
