Death on the Cherwell
Death on the Cherwell: A British Library Crime Classic | Mavis Doriel Hay
6 posts | 2 read | 4 to read
For Miss Cordell, principal of Persephone College, there are two great evils to be feared: unladylike behavior among her students, and bad publicity for the college. So her prim and cozy world is turned upside down when a secret society of undergraduates meets by the river on a gloomy January afternoon, only to find the drowned body of the college bursar floating in her canoe. The police assume that a student prank got out of hand, but the resourceful Persephone girls suspect foul play, and take the investigation into their own hands. Soon they uncover the tangled secrets that led to the bursars death and the clues that point to a fellow student. This classic mystery novel, with its evocative setting in an Oxford womens college, is now republished for the first time since the 1930s, with an introduction by the award-winning crime writer Stephen Booth.

This was a charming mystery which took several unexpected turns (unexpected by me anyway). The college students who do some of the investigating were lots of fun although the police solve the crime, really.

“Respectable publicity was bad enough because newspaper reporters, however carefully instructed, were liable to break out into some idiocy about ‘undergraduettes‘ or ‘academic caps coquettishly set on golden curls.‘ But shameful publicity!”

quote
jfount

“Conscious of the brevity of their college life, [undergraduates] are ready to seize every opportunity to assert their individuality. The easily acquired label of ‘originality‘ is so much more distinguished than the ‘naughtiness‘ of their out-passed school days, and quite a lot of wildness may be mixed with a modicum of work and form a sound basis for a highly respectable later life.”

Here‘s my haul from my very first visit to Powell‘s Books.

Why, oh why, is there a weight restriction on luggage for flights? 😉

TrishB Great haul 👍🏻 pesky luggage limitations!! 6y
AmyG Nice! Maybe ship these home...media mail. 6y
Kalalalatja I‘m always cursing those restrictions 😅 great haul! 6y

BookishBelle Love Powell‘s!! I hate those weight limits too! Though, I usually run out of space before having to worry about them. 🙃 6y
Leftcoastzen Nice! 6y
saresmoore Oh my goodness, this stack has me feeling all twitterpated! Tell me more about the Austen book, please? 6y
Sweettartlaura I had two existential crises when I first visited Powell‘s: 1. I would never make enough money to buy all the books I want, which led me to wonder where I‘ve gone wrong in my life choices; and 2. Even if I did have all the money to buy all the books, I don‘t have enough time left on Earth to read all the books I want to read, which led me to think of all the things I have left to do😱 It was ... terrifying. But I can‘t wait to go back ❤️📚 6y
Hollie Looks like a good haul! 6y
Lizpixie I would‘ve mailed some to myself, and if I had a sympathetic friend in the area, leave some with them so they can mail them to you when you can afford another parcel. Gives you something to look forward too as well then.👍 6y
LeahBergen @saresmoore It‘s a biography of Jane Austen‘s sister-in-law, based on a big cache of her letters. She married Jane‘s sea captain brother and ended up living on board ships with him (and her children!) during the Napoleonic Wars. Her letters home to Jane and family are said to have inspired much of the naval plotting and information in Jane‘s novels. Cool, huh? 6y
LeahBergen @saresmoore Oh, the Benson book on the bottom of the stack has an unpublished (in book form) Miss Mapp story in it! 6y
saresmoore Yes, cool! That‘s the type of book that makes me want to forego all other reading and learn everything I can about Jane Austen. Oh, dear... 6y
saresmoore Gah! How neat! More book envy! 6y
Hooked_on_books Before I lived in Oregon, I visited and went to Powell‘s for the first time. I had a carry-on roller bag and a backpack. On the way home, I had to check the bag and carried on my new Powell‘s tote along with the backpack. All the bags were crammed with books. And I‘ve been in love ever since. 😍 I‘m glad you had a good first visit! 6y
Tamra Bookish envy! 6y
DebinHawaii Excellent haul! 😍📚👍 6y
Mdargusch Nice pile! 😁 6y
LeahBergen @TrishB @AmyG @Kalalalatja @BookishBelle @Leftcoastzen @Hollie @Tamra @DebinHawaii @Mdargusch Thanks all! It‘s probably a good thing for my shelves that I had to draw some sort of limit. 😄 6y
LeahBergen @Sweettartlaura That‘s hilarious! I didn‘t have an existential crisis but I thought I‘d have to breathe into a paper bag from “excitement hyperventilation”. 😆 6y
LeahBergen @Lizpixie 😂😂 6y
LeahBergen @Hooked_on_books 😂😂 Well, I did cram a few of these into my husband‘s suitcase. I definitely contemplated the Powell‘s tote carry-on, though! 6y
mabell 😍😍 6y
Swe_Eva Mary Roach is one of my all-time favorites! 6y
LeahBergen @mabell Thanks! 😘 6y
LeahBergen @Swe_Eva This will be my first read of hers (although I already have Gulp waiting on my shelf 😆). 6y
Hamlet All I can say is thank goodness for Media Rate by the U.S. Post Office! 6y
Swe_Eva @LeahBergen You will find the answers to many questions you never even knew you had! 😂 Also recommending her 6y
RealLifeReading Envious!! I made it to Oregon but we were in the southern coastal area and powells was sadly too far a drive from there. Another time! 6y
rubyslippersreads Did you consider buying an extra seat for your books? 😂 6y
Lindy Store map... ❤️ 6y
LeahBergen @Hamlet Does that work for sending to Canada, I wonder? 🤔 6y
LeahBergen @Swe_Eva Thanks! I thought Spook sounded good, as well. 6y
LeahBergen @RealLifeReading Aww, too bad! 😫 6y
LeahBergen @rubyslippersreads Now why didn‘t I think of that? 😆 6y
LeahBergen @Lindy And it was definitely needed, too! 6y
Hamlet @LeahBergen Alas, no Media Rate to Canada. I just checked. Sorry! 6y
Swe_Eva @LeahBergen Spook was a little "off" for me personally as it deals with less "sciency" issues, but it's still Roach, so will educate and entertain for sure. 6y
LeahBergen @Hamlet Dang it! 😆 6y
LeahBergen @Swe_Eva Ah, yes. I can see that might be the case. 6y
Lindy @LeahBergen So I‘ve heard. I hope to get there one of these years. 6y
RohitSawant Oo, awesome! 😍 6y
Reviewsbylola I really enjoyed Stiff! 6y
Suet624 @Sweettartlaura loved your post. Leah, I can almost picture your face when you entered that store. I love Powell‘s. 6y

This was a really interesting golden age mystery that centers on the death of a bursar at a women's college at Oxford University in the 1930's. Unlike Gaudy Night, another mystery that takes place at a women's college in Oxford in the 1930's, Death on the Cherwell focuses on undergraduates. It was a fun read. Sadly, Mavis Doriel Hay wrote only 3 mysteries, but all are worth reading!
I wonder if there are other mysteries set in women's colleges?

Undergraduates, especially those in their first year, are not, of course, quite sane or quite adult. 😂
