3⭐️ I‘d never heard of Operation Mincemeat until I reached the end of this book. I‘m not sure if I want to dig deeper and read The Man Who Never Was… maybe later during my retirement 🤪 I can‘t say that I enjoyed the tagged book very much; it should be titled The Life of Willie Maryngton because Operation Heartbreak (Mincemeat) is just the last 20 pages of the book 🤓

Cathythoughts 💔 loved this one. 14mo
sisilia @Cathythoughts 😆 Have you read ? It‘s set during the Blitz and lots of salty conversations (it‘s Patrick Hamilton‘s style!) 14mo
Cathythoughts I havnt read that one .. but I‘m stacking it now. X 14mo
LeahBergen I have The Slaves of Solitude waiting on my shelves. 👍 14mo
sisilia @LeahBergen You‘ll love it 😍 14mo

Oof, this one really got me. Young orphan Willie Maryngton dreams of being a soldier in WWI. Just as he's about to join the action, the war ends; years later at the outset of WWII, he is now too old for combat. This short novel packs a skillful punch- right as I started to become a little frustrated with our characters, the ending came along and turned me upside down. Don't investigate too much of this one beforehand- just read and enjoy the ride!

LeahBergen This one really got me, too! 1y
Cathythoughts It got me too 💔 1y

#Persephoneclub Operation Heartbreak … Operation Mincemeat. About to watch the movie .. I‘ll keep ye posted 👍🏻❤️

LeahBergen How was it? Was it similar to the book? 2y
CarolynM What did you think? Should I watch it? 2y
rubyslippersreads I can‘t decide whether to watch or not. Looking forward to your review to help me decide. 2y
Cathythoughts @LeahBergen @CarolynM @rubyslippersreads Itwas different from the book, focussing more intensely on the ‘ operation‘. Extremely complicated and I didn‘t understand it all. Still, it was brilliantly done and moved me tears. I‘d highly recommend 💔 2y
LeahBergen Thanks! I‘ll check it out. 😘 2y

Similarly to other #persephoneclub readers who've finished this one, I want to be a little circumspect in commenting, because the Not Knowing greatly contributed to my reaction here. But I loved the book and the characters (Oh, Willie! Oh, Felicity!) and it made me cry and I'm so glad it was our pick this month. Also, cultural synchronicity is a funny thing.

LeahBergen Lovely review. I can already see myself buying this for friends, which is a sure sign of how much I‘ve loved a book! 2y
Cathythoughts Great review ❤️ I loved the characters too. A very memorable book. Loving our #persephoneclub 🥰 2y

‘Nobody ever had fewer relations than Willie Maryngton‘ this is the opening line. His mother died giving birth to him , his father a professional soldier was killed in 1914, Willie was 14 ,no siblings ,no cousins. He was taken in by a Mrs. Osborne , she had 3 children who befriended him. Willie‘s big wish was to be a soldier. I can‘t say much more without spoilers, but I can tell you that it will break your heart. I truly loved it #PersephoneClub

Soubhiville I love your photo! 2y
JamieArc Yes, great photo 2y
LeahBergen Lovely photo and review, Cathy. ❤️❤️ Yes, it‘s hard to talk about this one without spoilers as a good part of my enjoyment of the novel was not knowing where it was going. 2y

Cathythoughts @LeahBergen Thanks, yes a hard one to talk about with the spoilers. These Persephones are brilliant ♥️ 2y
Oryx Think this might need to be my next Persephone. Lovely review 2y
quietjenn Just skimming your comments now, but going to read it this weekend and come back! 2y
Cathythoughts @Oryx It‘s very good ♥️💔 2y
Cathythoughts @quietjenn Looking forward to your thoughts👍🏻♥️ 2y
CarolynM Great review❤️💔 I agree with @LeahBergen a lot of the enjoyment was the element of surprise. I‘m not sure if I want to see the film now. 2y
Cathythoughts @CarolynM @LeahBergen I wonder if I‘d want to see the film now either ? I might have to leave the cinema just before the end, I don‘t know if I could go through that again .. so sad and awful really. I‘ll probably end up going when it‘s here .. be nice if we could all go together. 2y
LeahBergen @Cathythoughts @CarolynM I took a peek at what the movie was about and it seems like it‘s based on the actual events of Operation Mincemeat and not this novel (and its characters). It also seems to have a more farcical tone to it, by the look of it? 2y
Cathythoughts @LeahBergen Interesting, I‘m curious now to see what it‘s like, I‘ll go and see it if it comes here. 2y
rubyslippersreads @Cathythoughts @LeahBergen @CarolynM It‘s on Netflix here, but I‘m not sure whether I want to watch it. Although the Afterword does say that readers/viewers of the nonfiction version can imagine that “Major Martin” was actually Willie. 2y
LeahBergen @rubyslippersreads My thoughts are much the same as yours. Let‘s see what @Cathythoughts thinks when she watches it. 😆 2y

‘When he had shaken hands with some of his friends, and came over the side for the last time, he had a curious and most uncomfortable feeling in his chest, and he found himself foolishly wondering whether people‘s hearts really do break, whether it might not be more than a mere figure of speech.‘
#PersephoneClub loving this one 💔

LeahBergen Lovely pic! 🍷 I‘ll be starting soon. 2y
Cathythoughts @leahbergen It‘s so good. I have a funny feeling I may have seen the movie years ago ( or read the book ) it feels familiar 🤷🏼‍♀️ 2y
Cathythoughts @LeahBergen That is if there even was a movie. 🤔 (edited) 2y
See All 11 Comments
rubyslippersreads @Cathythoughts @LeahBergen According to IMDB, it was a 1956 movie called The Man Who Never Was. It also seems to be the basis for a new movie called Operation Mincemeat. (edited) 2y
LeahBergen @Cathythoughts Oh, really? I‘ve been avoiding reading about it or the new movie coming out to avoid spoilers! 😆 @rubyslippersreads 2y
Cathythoughts Interesting, I don‘t know if I even saw that earlier movie. It just seemed familiar. And a new movie @rubyslippersreads .. I wonder what that will be like 🤔😁. (edited) 2y
Cathythoughts @LeahBergen Yes , one definitely wants to avoid spoilers with this one. 2y
rubyslippersreads @Cathythoughts @LeahBergen I hope I didn‘t spoil anything for either of you (or myself, for that matter). 😕 2y
Cathythoughts @rubyslippersreads Absolutely not ! All good 😘. I‘ve finished, I really couldn‘t put it down ♥️💔 (edited) 2y
LeahBergen @rubyslippersreads Oh, not at all! I should have been clearer and said that I heard that the new movie was based on this book and so I‘ve been avoiding looking at anything about it until I start reading. 😀 2y
CarolynM @rubyslippersreads @LeahBergen That film has just started showing here and I was thinking about going to see it. I didn‘t realise it was based on this book! I‘ll definitely have to go now🙂 2y
