Postcards: The Rise and Fall of the Worlds First Social Network | Lydia Pyne
4 posts | 1 read | 1 to read
A global exploration of postcards as artifacts at the intersection of history, science, technology, art, and culture. Postcards are usually associated with banal holiday pleasantries, but they are made possible by sophisticated industries and institutions, from printers to postal services. When they were invented, postcards established what is now taken for granted in modern times: the ability to send and receive messages around the world easily and inexpensively. Fundamentally they are about creating personal connectionslinks between people, places, and beliefs. Lydia Pyne examines postcards on a global scale, to understand them as artifacts that are at the intersection of history, science, technology, art, and culture. In doing so, she shows how postcards were the first global social network and also, here in the twenty-first century, how postcards are not yet extinct.

Just in time before the start of #scarathlon, my last two #litsylove postcards are going out today! It was fun sending a quick hello to everyone (I hope my system didn't break down and miss someone), and I look forward to getting to know people better with full letters 😁

Read this so I can review it for Postcrossing's blog, and enjoyed it greatly. I used a set of sticky page markers (which someone sent me in a Litsy swap ages ago, actually!) to mark a bunch of pages I'm interested in flicking back to when I write the review. 😁

AsYouWish @Texreader Thanks!!! I was super surprised with all the goodies. I am a little obsessed with the thumb page holder, it is soooo pretty - the picture doesn‘t do it justice. 😁💙 2y

Hey all! I would love to introduce you to a small business run by a book lover. Abbie has taken her love of books & turned it into beautiful works of art that can be sent through the mail! I encourage you to check out her Etsy or join the awesome Facebook group - she is planning to do monthly giveaways (I just won the April one!). She currently has 9 sets to chose from & there may or may not be a Princess Bride inspired one, 🤫
