“Because we are poor, shall we be vicious?”

This quote opens the tagged book that starts in the ‘30‘s and ends with the Detroit riot. The quote is also a part of The White Devil by John Webster.

Pickpick

To me the poor family Wendall started out as 'them' for sure; mother Loretta is so very far away from anyone I can imagine. Her harshness, her quite unconventional love for her children, but also her strength and willpower.
The way her children respond to the circumstances under which they grow up is quite moving and in a way I can relate to it, which makes 'them' no longer 'them'. I think this is the point that Oates wanted to make. #1001books

BarbaraBB Besides that I was shocked by the Afterword after reading the Author's Note! It changed my image of Oates as a writer completely! 7y
Cathythoughts Barbara, I‘m wondering if this book can be read as a stand alone , as I see it‘s part of a quartet ?? Thanks 4y
BarbaraBB @Cathythoughts I‘ve read it as a stand alone without knowing it is part of a series and had no problem reading it. So I should give it a try if I were you! 4y
Cathythoughts Thanks 👍🏻 4y

There she is! The myth, the legend, her lady, Joyce Carol Oates. 😎👍🏻 Yeeaahh. She read a chapter from Book Of Martyrs that isn't in the book 😆. So there ya go, lol. It was a great time. #BEA17

Mehso-so

Well, this book was a nice slice of depressing. I felt kinda "meh" about it. I didn't connect with any of the characters and I'm not sure if you're meant to... 92/1,001 #1001Books

vivastory What are your favorite Oates' novels? 7y
AshleyHoss820 I've only read this and Black Water by her and I really liked Black Water! 7y
