Ghost Lover: Stories | Lisa Taddeo
8 posts | 9 read | 16 to read
From Lisa Taddeo, #1 New York Times bestselling and award-winning author of Three Women and our most eloquent and faithful chronicler of human desire (Esquire), Ghost Lover is an electrifying collection of masterful and fearless short stories. Behind anonymous screens, an army of cool and beautiful girls manage the dating service Ghost Lover, a forwarding system for text messages that promises to spare you the anguish of trying to stay composed while communicating with your crush. At a star-studded political fundraiser in a Los Angeles mansion, a trio of women compete to win the heart of the slick guest of honor. On a quest to lose her virginity, a daughter tracks down her deceased mothers old flame, the rugged, comically named Jon Deere. In these twelve riveting stories, two of which have been awarded the Pushcart Prize, Lisa Taddeo brings to life the fever of obsession, the blindness of love, and the mania of grief. Featuring Taddeos arresting prose that continues to thrill her legions of fans, Ghost Lover dares you to look away.

I love how bold this writing is. Unafraid, brutal, unwaveringly honest, let‘s it all hang out! Each story captures each woman so perfectly, warts and all, with all her deepest, darkest thoughts. Love this author….. really, really great.

BarbaraBB Oh wow. Sounds great, even though I wasn‘t a fan of Three Women. Stacking! 8mo
Cortg @BarbaraBB @karenUK Three Women is a possible read for a book with just text on the cover. Anyone have any other recs? I may still read it, just curious of any others out there that were enjoyed. 8mo

This was not my favourite Taddeo. I did it no favours by reading a book of Atwood stories first. The writing was at times razor sharp and others too samey. Some memorable stories.

Taddeo continues to have interesting things to say about the complex paths women walk through the world, particularly in relation to desire, ageing, and trauma. In the short form, Taddeo‘s incisive, measured prose is very effective- she moves seamlessly between underrated narration of the everyday to brutality. Like most collections of stories, this was a little uneven, but all the stories left me thinking or feeling something.

Nobody can write about women like Lisa Taddeo. Three Women is one of my favorite books of all time. And this book of short stories really captures women of all ages, what they say, what they do, how they feel. I kept shaking my head as I read these stories, because I knew exactly who these women were.

This short story collection has been a ghost in my mind since I finished it a few days ago. Do you ever have one of those? A book that just echos in your head that you feel pieces of everywhere? Her female MCs were facing middle age and wondering about the past or if they were even relevant or noticeable. They resonated with me. I didn‘t care for Three Women, but I‘m going to read her fiction.

4.5☆ A collection of nine incredibly fresh, intimate and wonderfully written stories exploring female desire, sexuality, aging and friendships. So this review is for the readers who have found Taddeo's work polarizing. Or the people who have yet to read her work. READ THESE STORIES because Taddeo's writing excelles in short fiction form, she completely won me over! My favorites were Forty-Two, Beautiful People, and Grace Magorian. #bookreview
