Immortal Count: The Life and Films of Bela Lugosi
Immortal Count: The Life and Films of Bela Lugosi | Arthur Lennig
8 posts | 3 read | 1 reading | 1 to read
Bela Lugosi won immediate fame for his portrayal of the immortal count in the 1931 film "Dracula." After a decade of trying vainly to broaden his range and secure parts to challenge his acting abilities, Lugosi resigned himself to a career as the world's most recognizable vampire. His last years were spent as a forgotten and rather tragic figure. When he died in 1956, Lugosi could not have known that vindication of his talent would come -- his face would adorn theaters, his image would appear on greeting cards and postage stamps, his film memorabilia would sell for more than he earned in his entire career, and his Hungarian accent would be instantly recognized by millions of people.Martin Landau's Oscar-winning role as Lugosi in the 1994 film "Ed Wood" added an ironic twist to a career that had ended in oblivion. In 1974, devoted Lugosi fan Arthur Lennig published a highly regarded biography of the unsung actor. More than twice the length of the original and completely rewritten, " The Immortal Count" provides deeper insights into Lugosi's films and personality. Drawing upon personal interviews, studio memos, shooting scripts, research in Romania and Hungary, and his own recollections, Lennig has written the definitive account of Lugosi's tragic life.

The last thing I want is to bring anyone down but I'm absolutely distraught. My beautiful Bela Lugosi was attacked and murdered by my very own dogs. I miss him terribly and Im having a very hard time looking at my dogs. I saw it and I can't forget it! I dont need any comments I just wanted to talk about it a little. 😭😭😭😭

You cant see her couple of white hairs in this picture lol
@LKK526 @ozma.of.oz this is Bela Lugosi

LKK526 Adorable! Kuna has some white hair too. When our previous black cat died, my husband went immediately to get another rescue black cat. He took the carrier with him and Kuna jumped right in. If he has to go to the vet and he sees the carrier out he goes in and lies down. We never have to chase him. @ozma.of.oz 2y

I absolutely love this book. It‘s honest and heartfelt, but it also remains unbiased. I read a book previously about Boris Karloff that seemed way too infatuated with him, but this book talks about Lugosi‘s successes and also his failure, personal and professional. My heart breaks about Lugosi, Jr.‘s treatment of his father‘s legacy after he died. But I was and always will be a devout Lugosi fangirl.

....Horror, to me, is learning that you cannot influence your destiny. Horror, to me, I‘d the reptilian sting of the knowledge of my own stupidity, my own lack of foresight, my belief that because I had always worked, I would always work.

Night of Terror wrapped up last night‘s triple Béla feature. And this time, Béla wasn‘t the mad scientist.

Bela made 9 movies for producer Katzman, this is his third, Black Dragons, from 1942. It centers on WW2, and the Japan Black Dragon Society, plotting a evil plan with the Nazis, sending Dr. Melcher to Japan to transform bodies to resemble American leaders. The actual leaders are murdered and replaced with their likeness.
The cast includes Clayton Moore, who later became known as The Lone Ranger.

With a budget of only 50,000, this film began a classic.
