12 posts | 16 read | 14 to read
From bestselling gothic horror author Darcy Coates comes a chilling story of a quiet house on a forgotten suburban lane that hides a deadly secret... Leigh Harker is certain her house is haunted. Curtains open by themselves. Radios turn off and on. And a dark figure looms outside her bedroom door at night, watching her...waiting for her to finally let down her guard and fall asleep. Despite appearances, despite all logic, Leigh knows she's no longer alone. Pushed to her limits but unwilling to abandon her beloved home, Leigh's determined to find some answers. But the more she digs, the more she begins to suspect that her house is keeping troubling secrets...and some of them could be deadly. I enjoyed it, the audiobook is great. Leigh lives alone, no friends and hasn‘t see her sister for a long time. She starts to listen noises at night, a figure trying to enter into her room and that voice. Oh, how well this part was dramatized in the audiobook. Can‘t say much but the story has a couple of twist, some I didn‘t expected, some I suspected. If you enjoyed Darcy Dark and the movie The Others, there is a high chance you will like it

Gissy The gifts were practical, things that I will use. 3.5/3.8⭐️

I guessed the initial twist and sort of guessed the final twist, but the book somehow ended up being more than I thought it would be. I enjoyed it!

This is last years Spooky box from Once Upon a Book Club and this a how far behind I am reading my boxes! 🤣 I so wish I would have read this book sooner because I was so surprised by it. I was expecting a ghost story but this was so much more. I definitely plan to read more books by Darcy Coates because I loved this one so much.

What I enjoyed: Coates has a gift for creepy prose. If you want to linger in the blow-by-blow details of every millisecond of a haunting, this book is for you.

That said, it was agonizingly slow. There's not a lot of character development at first. Normally, I would DNF a book like this, but it's spooky season, so I pushed through. I'm glad I did. I'll admit the ending got me and I shed a few tears.

Well that was one creepy-ass read! I started reading it yesterday evening but had to abandon it & pick it up again this morning. I usually complain that horror books are not scary enough, but I don't have that complaint here.

I can't say too much about the plot without giving it away, so I will just say that this is the second book I've read by this author & I've loved both, although endings are not their strong point. 4🌟

OutsmartYourShelf TW: There are one or two places in the book where anyone with a phobia of small, cramped spaces may struggle.

A perfect case for sticking with a slow book. Told in first person voice, I was having trouble connecting with Leigh. A recluse who shuns human contact, she wasn‘t a super interesting or sympathetic character. Is she going crazy? Is she being haunted? I was a bit bored, and then about a third of the way in I was enthralled by a turn and stayed riveted to the end. By the end, I really liked Leigh and was emotionally invested. Worth the slow start!
