Wendy, Darling
Wendy, Darling | A. C. Wise
12 posts | 12 read | 25 to read
A lush, feminist re-imagining on what happened to Wendy after Neverland, for fans of Circe and The Mere Wife. Find the second star from the right, and fly straight on 'til morning, all the way to Neverland, a children's paradise with no rules, no adults, only endless adventure and enchanted forests - all led by the charismatic boy who will never grow old. But Wendy Darling grew up. She has a husband and a young daughter called Jane, a life in London. But one night, after all these years, Peter Pan returns. Wendy finds him outside her daughter's window, looking to claim a new mother for his Lost Boys. But instead of Wendy, he takes Jane. Now a grown woman, a mother, a patient and a survivor, Wendy must follow Peter back to Neverland to rescue her daughter and finally face the darkness at the heart of the island...

Day 3: Finished 1 kindle book, 1 audiobook

Loved Wendy, Darling by A. C. Wise❣️
Felt lukewarm about Emma, by Jane Austen; though I loved narration by Emma Thompson and JoAnn Froggat.

Fascinating and beautifully written look at Peter Pan from Wendy‘s POV - her POV as a grown up. Lots to unpack here…mental illness and the stigma that goes with it, PTSD, feminism, sexuality, racism…these all briefly make an appearance. The main theme is, true to Peter Pan, about growing up and believing in yourself and finding what gives you strength. I thought this was really thought provoking and had some lovely prose. Some horrifying elements.

DimeryRene Wow!!! I would read the heck out of this. 3y
Bookgirl @DimeryRene She leaves a lot open to interpretation. I immediately wanted to discuss it as soon as I finished it. 3y
DimeryRene @Bookgirl that‘s the best!! 3y

Thank you, #netgalley, for the ARC of #WendyDarling!
This story is absolutely perfect! It takes the main element of Peter Pan that I always found bothersome and exposed it for the nightmare it is. Told between 1904 Neverland, 1917-1920 London, and “present day“ (1931) London and Neverland, Wendy, Darling tells the story of Wendy and her family and the repercussions of her initial Neverland visit, her memories, and her brothers' lack of memories.

A psychological take on a grown up Wendy and her grapplings with Peter Pan. Interesting take on racism. No Tinkerbell.
