In the early 90‘s, Josephine is at college and known in the world as Girl One. She was 1 of 9 baby girls born to women in the 70‘s due to parthenogenesis which is reproduction without a partner. Women are happy about it but as usual men lose their minds and the place they were living called the Homestead is burnt up along with the Dr. who helped them and baby #9. Now, Girl One‘s mother is missing and that starts her on a journey that will👇🏼

Reggie unravel the past and reveal the truth. Oh yeah, and maybe the babies have grown up to have latent superpowers. This was good, but there was some stuff in here that happens that is clunky and had me wondering if it needed to be in here. Overall a pick. 3y
Twainy Whaaat are the chances! I finished this book Sunday night and wasn‘t going to review it cuz I was conflicted. Your review, exactly! 😁 (edited) 3y
Megabooks I love the word parthenogenesis! Some words are just cool. 3y

Michael_Gee Omg parthenogenesis! I just learned that word on CBS Radio Mystery Theater‘s 1978 “The Unholy Miracle” 3y
Reggie @Megabooks lol I bet it‘s been a spelling bee word and some kid has never forgotten it. It is pretty cool. 3y
Reggie @Michael_Gee new word coincidences! 3y
Megabooks For me, it was an exotic animal medicine veterinary school lecture. Now I use my expensive degree to know cool words, help family members interpret biopsy results, and answer questions about dog behavior from friends. A few other uses, but I‘m not working in the field anymore, so 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3y
Reggie @Megabooks well, I wouldn‘t vote you off the island in a zombie apocalypse, Meg. 3y
Megabooks Yay!! I think I would be pretty good if that came to pass. 😂 3y
Centique @Megabooks @Reggie this is the best convo 😂😂 you guys are my heroes 💕 3y

🎧 Slow start, great middle, meh ending. Josie is 1 of 9 miracle babies conceived without male DNA.
Several mysteries & murders later Josie, baby one is on a cross country road trip looking for her mom.

She comes across the scientist‘s son, Tom who offers help, then 2 of the other 8 & then she falls for Kate.

A lot happens but it was more relationship than sci-fi. The science to magic was never explained. It was very girl power!

⭐️⭐️⭐️1/3

Reggie Jinx-pinch poke you owe me a coke. I just posted about this book right after you. Lol, Twinkies! 3y
Reggie Also- I really didn‘t feel the whole Cate-Josephine thing. I didn‘t understand the need for that in here. 3y
Twainy OMG that‘s the main reason why I was annoyed and reduced the rating!!! I was like where did that come from. 😡 Made me sad cuz the premise was interesting & had promise. 3y

It took me a while to get into this one, an account of life as the world's first baby created by parthenogenesis (a.k.a. without a biological father.) The author's attempts to explain how this happened (science! No, wait, magic!) were distracting in their vague implausibility, but to be honest I enjoyed the book more when I threw critical thinking out the window and rolled with the plot: a missing mother, a wild road trip, secrets galore.

7-8-21: My 73rd finished book of 2021! Josie is Girl One, the first of 9 miracle babies conceived without male dna on an experimental compound called the Homestead. All were raised together until a fire claimed 3 lives with the survivors left to scatter. Years later, after Josie‘s mother goes missing, Josie sets out to find her with the help of the other miracle babies, uncovering secrets about their origins. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🎉📖#️⃣7️⃣3️⃣

Pitched as Orphan Black meets Margaret Atwood, & that is what you get.
The writing in this story was incredibly fun & the tension was really well-crafted. Things moved at a good clip & new characters just kept adding fun layers to the tale. I somewhat knew what was going on, but it did take a few turns & was just a good time. There was plenty of creep factor & I was definitely interested in the cult-like feel. A good, gripping read.

The premise is fantastic—a group of 9 babies, conceived without male DNA, are raised in a commune until a mysterious fire destroys everything & claims two lives. Years later, Baby One (the first to be born) hunts for the truth behind it all when her mother goes missing. Unfortunately, the story didn‘t wow—writing is good, not great, surprises aren‘t surprising, & characters are just ok. BUT…the premise is interesting enough it warrants a pick.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! It turned into a fast-paced thriller that I wasn't expecting and I loved the mix of supernatural.

A group of women set out to form a community were men are not needed to reproduce. However, one child shows a gift no one thought possible which starts a series of events that unravel everything they dreamed of creating.

Addison_Reads This also works for the theme #takearoadtripday for #LittenListen since the main character and her friends take a road trip in search of her missing mother. 3y

I recommend Girl One to thriller and mystery readers that want something a little different that the typical suspense novel marketed today. With both a feminist and scientific narrative it creates a more unique and thought provoking story.

3.75 rounded to 4 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
