The Halloween Moon
The Halloween Moon | Joseph Fink
12 posts | 11 read | 12 to read
From New York Times bestselling adult author Joseph Fink comes a wickedly fun middle grade novel about a Halloween-obsessed girl named Esther Gold, who goes out trick-or-treating for one last year, only to find her town under the thrall of a mysterious presence. Esther Gold loves Halloween more than anything in the world. So she is determined to go trick-or-treating again this year despite the fact that her parents think she is officially too old. Esther has it all planned out, from her costume to her candy-collecting strategy. But when the night rolls around, something feels . . . off. No one is answering their door. The moon is an unnatural shade of orange. Strange children wander the streets, wearing creepy costumes that might not be costumes at all. And it seems like the only people besides Esther who are awake to see it all are her best friend, her school bully, and her grown-up next-door neighbor. Together, this unlikely crew must find a way to lift the curse that has been placed upon their small town before its too late. Because someone is out to make sure Halloween never comes to an end. And even Esther doesnt want to be trapped in this night forever.

This was a spooky middle grade novel about a girl who loves Halloween but when her parents decide she's too old to trick or treat, she sneaks out. Except she finds a barren neighborhood with creepy characters roaming the streets. She only has her best friend, her school bully, & her annoying neighbor to help fight the evil forces at work

I was never able to get into the Night Vale books (probably because I never listened to the podcast) but this is not a Night Vale book. It's a book about a young girl who loves Halloween almost as much as I do. It's creepy and fun, but not scary. And I can't wait to re-read it in October. 🙂

Bailedbailed

I hate to bail on books, but I was bored and uninterested in this one. I liked the main character, Esther, who loves Halloween and is not ready to give up trick-or-treating, but I found the story dull overall. Also, some of the adults were a bit odd. #Screamathon

Michael_Gee Agree, this one is dull. 5mo
Bookzombie @Michael_Gee Did you bail too? 5mo
Michael_Gee @Bookzombie I probably would have around when the queen was introduced, but we were reading it for book club and I have only bailed once on a book club pick and regretted it so much I don‘t want to do it again. I‘d rather push through so I can confidently drag it in its entirety lol 5mo
Bookzombie @Michael_Gee Lol. What did your book club think of it? 5mo
Michael_Gee @Bookzombie mostly meh. The ones that liked it said it was “cute” and fast to read. 5mo

How old is *too* old to go trick-or-treating? Fink turns that coming-of-age decision on its head, layering on all the things 13-year-olds grapple with: fear of change, new friendships, new loves, aging parents & a wily, unpredictable future. Storytelling at its best, with a relentless brave protagonist, her three sturdy friends, an evil antagonist & a quest, all rolled into a delicious Southern California setting during the best time of the year.

Mehso-so

A 13 year old, who loves Halloween and has been working on her costume for months, is told by her parents, the day before Halloween, that she is “too old” to trick or treat. And when she objects they accuse her of being a brat. This injustice filled me with rage. And the narrative spent more time empathizing with adult authority, then letting her express rage or frustration.

I really enjoyed this middle grade story which would make for a fantastic autumnal read. On the surface it‘s a story about a young girl who really loves Halloween and a Halloween when everything goes wrong…for reasons. Dig a little deeper and it‘s a story about growing up, belonging, acceptance, bullying, and friendship. With just the right about if creepiness and suspense, this is a great spooky read for the middle grade set. On sale 7/20/21.

My Sunday morning book is the most pitch perfect middle grade Halloween story. Love it so far and I‘m sure it will be a hit with young readers looking for something a little creepy when autumn rolls around. It‘s so spot on it feels a little weird to be reading it in the middle of summer—I think an October reread will be in order! (The book is out later this month.)
