Professional Troublemaker: The Fear-Fighter Manual | Luvvie Ajayi Jones
10 posts | 14 read | 1 reading | 9 to read
From the New York Times bestselling author of I'm Judging You, a hilarious and powerful book that talks about how to tackle fear--that everlasting hater--and live boldly and audaciously in spite of all the reasons we have to cower Luvvie Ajayi is known for her trademark wit, warm voice, and exceptional integrity. But even she's been challenged by the enemy of progress known as fear. She was once afraid to call herself a writer because she was afraid of the title. She nearly skipped out on doing a TED talk that changed her life because of imposter syndrome. Also, she's deathly afraid of bugs. And, as she shares in Professional Troublemaker, she's not alone. We're all afraid of asking for what we want because we're afraid of hearing "no." We're afraid of being different, of being too much or not enough. We're afraid of leaving behind the known for the unknown. But in order to do the things that will truly, meaningfully change our lives, we have to become professional troublemakers: people who are committed to not letting fear talk them out of the things they need to do or say. With humor and honesty, and guided by the influence of her inspiring and professional troublemaking grandmother, Funmilayo Faloyin, Luvvie walks us through what we must get right within ourselves before we can do the things that scare us; how to use our voice for a greater good; and how to put movement to the voice we've been silencing--because truth-telling is a muscle. The point is not to be fearless. It is to know we are afraid and to charge forward regardless, to recognize the things we must do are more significant than the things we are afraid to do. This book shows you how she's done it, and how you can, too.

To know thyself is to not take all the praise to head or take all the shaming to heart. To know ourselves is to write our values in cement even if our goals are in sand.

This will sound weird but I think this is an excellent book. I just happen to not be the target audience for it. I loved the humor and writing style. It was chosen for a group buddy read and not something I would have chosen for myself. I have zero fear about going after what I want in life, and don't care what others think of me. I also have no problems standing up for others. This is a great book for those who might need those skills though.

This book feels like applying therapy in real time. She covers fear, boundaries, money, self confidence and asking for what we need/want. Strategy oriented and still fun to consume.

Some important ideas and lessons here. I‘m not sure how much of it is applicable to me personally, but there is a lot here to digest.

Mehso-so

It‘s not that she didn‘t make good points; it‘s that she repeated them ad nauseam throughout the chapter. That got really annoying. Her narration was engaging, though. This just barely dips into so-so territory for me, but I wouldn‘t say it‘s a bad or unhelpful book...just repetitious. #audiobook

This is not a book I would usually choose, but it‘s my first #FantasticStrangelings book, so I gave it a go. The first chapter is very self help, which I don‘t personally care for, but in the rest of the book, she uses her own life experiences to illustrate each point. She‘s insightful about human nature and I enjoyed learning about her life and family. Plus, she‘s funny.

Today‘s a good #bookmail day! Now that #botm is in my rear view, I‘ve become a Fantastic Strangeling! The tagged is my inaugural book and not something I would usually choose, but it looks like it‘ll be funny, which I like. Upper right is my latest #andotherstories subscription book, and my swap book from @vivastory has arrived and brought a friend! Thank you so much, Scott! I will surely enjoy them both. 🤗

vivastory I'm glad they reached you! I think you'll enjoy them! 3y
