Hitty Her First Hundred Years
Hitty Her First Hundred Years | Rachel Field
12 posts | 19 read | 5 to read
Hitty is a doll of great charm and character. It is indeed a privilege to publish her memoirs, which, besides being full of the most thrilling adventures on land and sea, also reveal her delightful personality. One glance at her portrait will show that she is no ordinary doll. Hitty, or Mehitable as she was really named, was made in the early 1800s for Phoebe Preble, a little girl from Maine. Young Phoebe was very proud of her beautiful doll and took her everywhere, even on a long sailing trip in a whaler. This is the story of Hitty's years with Phoebe, and the many that follow in the life of a well-loved doll.

Toy Story 2 only Woody and Jesse are more like your slightly racist grandma. I had a great time reading this because Hitty‘s adventures were so outlandish that you just had to laugh. I also really want to make a Moby Dick joke because I got some serious flashbacks to that vibe.

Big week for me in that I finished my BookSpin white whale that has taken me forever to finish. I also started the Corine Solomon series because it was an impulse buy at the used bookstore when I was looking for something else.

#WeeklyForecast
Goal this week is to finish Hitty and then make good inroads into The Black Prism. It's a chonky boi so I don't see me finishing both this week.

I managed to finish Trumpeter of Krakow and get a little over the 50% point in Watership Down which truly amazes me because I've been procrastinating on it hard. I've also started Hitty as a sort of reward for working on Watership Down.

#WeeklyForecast
My ultimate goal is to finish Watership Down AND Hitty but mostly I want o focus on Watership.

Story of a carved doll and her travels around the world. Newbery award winner that probably wasn't very popular. Strike one -- about a doll. Strike two -- not very exciting or if it seemed like it was getting there, that part was glossed over. Strike three -- not very PC with characterization.

Tamra Such an attractive cover though! 3y
Lcsmcat It was like the American Girls doll of its day. My mom (born in the 1930s) had the book and the doll. 3y
youngreadrshelf @Lcsmcat I get it. Probably not a lot of books out for kids then either. It just doesn‘t seem to have staying power. 3y

youngreadrshelf @Tamra cover better than the story. But you get that sometimes. 😉 3y
Lcsmcat @youngreadrshelf Right. I don‘t think the American Girls doll stories will either. It‘s kind of a gimmick. 3y
youngreadrshelf @Lcsmcat definitely right about that. Those just languish on my classroom library shelves after they were donated. 3y

A small handmade doll retells her adventures that includes a whaling ship. It was fine until she compared herself to a slave being sold at an auction. That was way too flippant, in my opinion.

TheBookHippie Says a lot to the times, also wow. I think it would be a good format for discussion in how to teach old literature like this. I‘m glad I read it as it‘s on my list of literature to digest gives one pause as to how deeply racism is and has been taught- it‘s just ingrained everywhere. 3y

A really charming story about a doll made of mountain-ash wood and her adventures over a hundred years. I love books that make me curious enough that I stop and look things up. I did that a few times while reading this book. Hitty is a little shallow, but I suppose that‘s to be expected of a doll. 😉

An old classic #ChildrensClassicRead2020

FYI problematic text that will have to be discussed if read with younger folks. As it reads like the time it was written in. It‘d make a great discussion in literature type of talk.

I have bad news: Hitty is a lil bit racist. This is a bigger issue with "Hitty" than the author's previous "Calico Bush". Her portrayal of Polynesians is particularly appalling. Still, if you can enjoy "Gilligan's Island" you can enjoy "Hitty".

It won the 1930 #Newbery Medal.

Lindy It sounds like this book is better suited to adults interested in colonialist attitudes in children's literature, rather than an audience of contemporary young people. 7y
Soscha @Lindy That's an excellent suggestion. Calico Bush, while still somewhat problematic, wasn't so gratuitously offensive in its portrayal of native peoples. Even putting that aside I'd consider it the better read between the two. 7y

Bitty is a classic that everyone should read. The book is about the story of a doll that travels the world, is dressed like a bride and lost a lot. 🌎 👰

akc2ngel My fifth grade teacher read this book to my class. I loved this book. 7y
