The Last Tiara
The Last Tiara | M.J. Rose
13 posts | 11 read | 9 to read
From New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller M.J. Rose comes a provocative and moving story of a young female architect in post-World War II Manhattan, who stumbles upon a hidden treasure and begins a journey to discovering her mothers life during the fall of the Romanovs. Sophia Moon had always been reticent about her life in Russia and when she dies, suspiciously, on a wintry New York evening, Isobelle despairs that her mothers secrets have died with her. But while renovating the apartment they shared, Isobelle discovers something among her mothers effectsa stunning silver tiara, stripped of its jewels. Isobelles research into the tiaras provenance draws her closer to her mothers pastincluding the story of what became of her father back in Russia, a man she has never known. The facts elude her until she meets a young jeweler, who wants to help her but is conflicted by his loyalty to the Midas Society, a covert international organization whose mission is to return lost and stolen antiques, jewels, and artwork to their original owners. Told in alternating points of view, the stories of the two young women unfurl as each struggles to find their way during two separate wars. In 1915, young Sofiya Petrovitch, favorite of the royal household and best friend of Grand Duchess Olga Nikolaevna, tends to wounded soldiers in a makeshift hospital within the grounds of the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg and finds the love of her life. In 1948 New York, Isobelle Moon works to break through the rampant sexism of the age as one of very few women working in a male-dominated profession and discovers far more about love and family than she ever hoped for. In M.J. Roses deftly constructed narrative, the secrets of Sofiyas early life are revealed incrementally, even as Isobelle herself works to solve the mystery of the historic Romanov tiara (which is based on an actual Romanov artifact that is, to this day, still missing)and how it is that her mother came to possess it. The two strands play off each other in finely-tuned counterpoint, building to a series of surprising and deeply satisfying revelations.

#2021Book38
I will always pick up a piece of historical fiction that involves switching back and forth between two different characters and timelines. However, I usually prefer one character/timeline over the other. This book is one of those rare cases where I was equally invested in both. I enjoyed every page of this book and even audibly gasped multiple times when various twists were revealed.

A historical novel filled with lots of different elements. The tale follows the story first of a mother name Sofiya, born in Russia, and later her daughter, born in America. Their stories cover a turbulent time in history between 2 World Wars. Sofiya flees Russian tyranny and bows to never look back, but with her death, her daughter has no answers about her past, until she finds a tiara among her mother‘s belongings. Can it unlock the past?

I'd really love to get out of this reading slump. 😬 Possibly on romance overload with the #GoodReads challenge I've been doing. Thankful it ends this month. Hoping King's new book will get me back on track. Patiently/not so patiently waiting to receive it.

Took far too long to finish. Attracted by plot - mystery/history behind a lost tiara of the Romanovs. Instead I got more romance & abundance of Russian history. Story about how even a skeleton of a former treasure can connect to countless things. The craftsmanship aspects like the Midas society & her mother's work in restoration were really intriguing. I loved Jane Healey‘s new “Historical Happy Hour” event. Prior to this event I had not heard of MJ Rose or her newest book ‘The Last Tiara‘ - but that‘s changing! I‘m so excited my library hold came in today so I can start it!! 🙌🏻 I can‘t wait for Jane‘s next event, I highly recommend watching ❤️

MsMelissa I‘ve read quite a few of Rose‘s books and have enjoyed them for the most part. Not read this one yet though. 3y
Aims42 @MsMelissa Oooo, do you have any favorites? 3y
MsMelissa I like her reincarnationist series, although I somehow read books 3-6 without reading books one and two 😂 She has a trilogy that is sitting on my shelves waiting to be read, the first book is this one 3y
Aims42 @MsMelissa Awesome!! The tagged book sounds very interesting 👍🏻 3y

📖 Tagged (Russian Historical fiction romance). May start Outlander with the incoming ❄️ storm.
📖 Audio is more convenient but I use both.
📖 Excluding graphic novels... The Haunting of Beatrix Greene.

5 ⭐
Isobelle Moon discovers a long kept secret from her mother. She finds hidden inside a wall an artifact that goes back to a historic time from their country of origin. It is a love story gone wrong through a time of revolution that sends Sofiya to America leaving her family and the love of her life behind to start a new life. A very good story that is a bit sad but endearing, too.

I received this ARC for an honest review. Thank you #Netgalley

I tried all week to get into this book, and finally today I did. The first 1/4 was slow to me then I could not put it down. A historical fiction with mystery and a little romance. Comes out February 2, 2021 and I recommend you grab it if you like these genres.

Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC.

I really like these. They're historical fiction with a bit of romance. The author takes a piece of jewelry that's famous for one reason or another and writes a story around it. This one is about a Russian diadem that went missing sometime after the Bolshevik revolution.
