The Portrait of a Mirror
The Portrait of a Mirror: A Novel | A. Natasha Joukovsky
4 posts | 5 read | 11 to read
A stunning reinvention of the myth of Narcissus as a modern novel of manners, about two young, well-heeled couples whose parallel lives intertwine over the course of a summer, by a sharp new voice in fiction Wes and Diana are the kind of privileged, well-educated, self-involved New Yorkers you may not want to like but can't help wanting to like you. With his boyish good looks, blue-blood pedigree, and the recent tidy valuation of his tech startup, Wes would have made any woman weak in the knees--any woman, that is, except perhaps his wife. Brilliant to the point of cunning, Diana possesses her own arsenal of charms, handily deployed against Wes in their constant wars of will and rhetorical sparring. Vivien and Dale live in Philadelphia, but with ties to the same prep schools and management consulting firms as Wes and Diana, they're of the same ilk. With a wedding date on the horizon and carefully curated life of coupledom, Vivien and Dale make a picture-perfect pair on Instagram. But when Vivien becomes a visiting curator at The Metropolitan Museum of Art just as Diana is starting a new consulting project in Philadelphia, the two couples' lives cross and tangle. It's the summer of 2015 and they're all enraptured by one another and too engulfed in desire to know what they want--despite knowing just how to act. In this wickedly fun debut, A. Natasha Joukovsky crafts an absorbing portrait of modern romance, rousing real sympathy for these flawed characters even as she skewers them. Shrewdly observed, whip-smart, and shot through with wit and good humor, The Portrait of a Mirror is a piercing exploration of narcissism, desire, self-delusion, and the great mythology of love.

There was a whole lot more depth to this pair of couples entwined in a Narcissus retelling than I expected. Thank for pulling this off my shelves @KarenUK 😘

Wes and Diana married young and have hit a rough spot. As she heads out of town on a consulting job, he sidles close to an old boarding school friend who just came to town. Little do they know, their partners are canoodling at the consulting firm. Mixed signal and missed messages abound!

Cathythoughts Great review! Sounds interesting, stacked 👍🏻 1y

Loved it. Sharp, witty and the pitch-perfect observations and snippy dialogue just shine. NYC, art & museums, rich people problems, couples behaving badly, & re-imagined modern-day Greek myth references, all this is just SO my jam! I wasn‘t expecting to laugh so much, or to enjoy it this much. I love a nice surprise! #pop22 #advanced #mirror @Cinfhen @barbarabb @megabooks @squirrelbrain @jenniferw88 @alisiakae @cortg @laughterhp @raelovestoread

KarenUK @Megabooks @cinfhen These people were flawed, to say the least, but I had a blast reading this! 💕 1y
Cortg Hmmm. I put a library hold on this. I have yet to read a book that takes place in the summer (my favorite season) that I haven‘t used for another prompt. The description says it takes place during the summer and sounds intriguing. 😊 1y

My sister @FelinesAndFelonies got me a Page1 subscription for my birthday. This is the second book to arrive from their store... I'd never even heard of this title and it sounds so intriguing! I'm excited to check out something that flew under my book radar.

Also, isn't this packaging devine? 🥰

Mehso-so

A compelling plot but the overly pretentious writing was off-putting - inchoate? ablutions? encomia? Come on.

Library book 2/3 for #AwesomeAugust

Andrew65 Well done 👏👏👏 3y
