The Many
The Many | Wyl Menmuir
On the surface, his move to the isolated village on the coast makes perfect sense. But the experience is an increasingly unsettling one for Timothy Bucchanan. A dead man no one will discuss. Wasted fish hauled from a contaminated sea. The dream of faceless men. Questions that lead to further questions. What truth are the villagers withholding? What fuels their interest and animosity towards him? And what pushes Timothy to dig deeper?

I don't know what the title is about, I don't know what the link is between Perran the fisherboy and Perran the son, I don't know what the environmental storyline means, I don't know who the woman in grey is or why she is there, I don't know what happened to Perran and why people should be so hostile towards Timothy, I don't know what Lauren's got to do with it. I am left with so many questions, I need to find some answers. #booker #manbooker

The good thing about having low expectations for a book is that it ends up being not as bad as you had anticipated.

This 160-page book was longlisted for the Man Booker Prize in 2016. From the reviews I've seen, people either loved this book or hated it - not a lot of middle ground. Thought I'd give it a whirl and see for myself!

#bestdebutsof2016 #feistyfeb

I didn't read many debuts that came out last year, but this weird, disturbing, sad novel stands out.

ReadingEnvy I liked this one but found it difficult to discuss unless someone else had read it too 7y
rockpools @ReadingEnvy I know what you mean. The end is so ... And changes how you see everything. 7y
rockpools @ReadingEnvy Also, I was on a hunt for micropresses yesterday & found short stories at Nightjar - I think he'd write a great short story! http://nightjarpress.weebly.com/rounds.html (edited) 7y
ReadingEnvy @RachelO ooh yeah agreed on the short stories 7y

Despite (1) not knowing what was going on a lot of the time, (2) the annoying pages-long recountings of dreams, (3) the clunky use of flashbacks, I quite enjoyed this brooding, atmospheric tale of grief and mystery in a Cornish fishing village. The novel's flaws were perhaps forgivable in a first novel; by the same token, its many strengths were all the more impressive.

Simona I had the same feelings. I didn't understand all of the allusions but still I enjoyed the story and in dark/mysterious atmosphere. 7y
ReadingEnvy I enjoyed this but it's so hard to talk about with people who haven't read it! 7y

In case you're confused, the affliction at issue here is caused by jellyfish stings.

Hobbinol Well, thanks for clearing that up! 8y

Absolutely amazing. I sobbed. So far this book is in my personal top pick for the Shortlist (even though it didn't make it). Holy Cats. I don't really want to review this book anymore because it is a book you should go into blind. Just trust me, it is so good.

JenP I loved it too! And impossible to review without giving thugs away 8y

This may be a book that needs reading twice. Heavily drenched in Cornish sea-fog. A sad, strange story.

ReadingEnvy I felt like it got better and better after I finished it. 8y

Our Man Booker Prize 2016 judges‘ comments on Wyl Menmuir‘s The Many!

‘The Many is a quiet book that packs a powerful punch.‘

Is it on your bookshelf?

#ManBooker2016 #FinestFiction

quirkyreader As soon as I heard about this book I added it to my TBR. I look forward to the long list every year. I've got various Booker winners and listed books in my piles. The most recent acquisition was the 2008 winner The White Tiger by Aravind Adiga. One of my reading goal it to read all of the long listed and short listed books. 8y

This was my first read of the 2016 Booker Longlist. I enjoyed the dread an uncertainty throughout. I would have liked a bit more at the end. Not much more though. I've enjoyed thinking back through to work out the meaning of certain elements. An impressive, if disturbing, debut.

Wait, what? I liked this book, but I'm not entirely sure what happened. But I still liked it. Moody, dark, and strange.

mauveandrosysky This is my least favorite of the man bookers that I've read so far. I liked where it went but it just wasn't compelling enough for me overall. 8y
RebeccaH @mauveandrosysky I got irritated by the dream sequences for sure. 8y

Up next! Booker long list #8.

BookishTrish Eight?!? I'm impressed. Who do you think will be shortlisted? 8y
RebeccaH I'd already read The Sellout, so that helped. And there are a lot of short books this year! If The Sellout doesn't make the list I'll be disappointed. I'd guess Eileen as well, and Lucy Barton. I guess I'm liking the Americans this year. @BookishTrish 8y

About halfway through Man Booker long listed The Many and it's pretty good. Read half the book in one sitting before falling asleep. It's easy to gobble this book up.

It's enigmatic and challenging book, interwoven with deep feelings of loss, grief and cold through the hole story. Story begins when Timothy moved in to the very hostile village/environment with close-circle of villagers. We slowly getting to know him trough his dreams, flashbacks and his observations of the village/sea.I have mixed feelings about this book, I don't understand/can't figure it out and for now I have too many unanswered questions.

Simona But I like prose very much and it is definitely re-read, because this one it's all about what isn't said/written in the book. I think it's great book for debate and interpretation. 8y
Jillreads I'm waiting for my copy to arrive. Excited to read it and glad you really enjoyed it! 8y
Simona @Jillreads It's a complex book that evokes curiosity and leaves you with a lot of questions. I still don't have a clue how to interpret them.🙄😳 8y

Sabotaging my own plans to only read books off my shelves in August, by filling up the kindle with samples from the Booker Longlist on the last day of July. And I *might* have had to buy The Many (because local) & North Water (because daily deal) to get me started. Seriously! No will power!

Magslhalliday I'm very intrigued by this one too. ;) 8y
