Future We Choose: Surviving the Climate Crisis
Future We Choose: Surviving the Climate Crisis | Christiana Figueres, Tom Rivett-Carnac
5 posts | 1 read | 10 to read
Climate change: it is arguably the most urgent and consequential issue humankind has ever faced. How we address it in the next thirty years will determine the kind of world we will live in and will bequeath to our children and to theirs. In The Future We Choose, Christiana Figueres and Tom Rivett-Carnac--who led negotiations for the United Nations during the historic Paris Agreement of 2015--have written a cautionary but optimistic book about the world's changing climate and the fate of humanity. The authors outline two possible scenarios for our planet. In one, they describe what life on Earth will be like by 2050 if we fail to meet the Paris climate targets. In the other, they lay out what it will be like to live in a carbon neutral, regenerative world. They argue for confronting the climate crisis head-on, with determination and optimism. The Future We Choose presents our options and tells us what governments, corporations, and each of us can and must do to fend off disaster.

We had a break from the heat today, which meant I could actually enjoy some time outdoors! Weather was reasonably comfortable in the high 80s, and the humidity definitely came down a tad. Love the morning view of the sun through the trees!

Tagging one of my favorite climate change books.

Chap 6 is talking about the perception of scarcity, and how you can change your mindset. The example they give to explain shifting this mindset is the rush to grab a seat on a train or subway. ⬇️⬇️

I couldn‘t help but think of the TP shortage in 2020 when reading this section.

#NFN2020 #TIL

alisiakae “Our mindset is so powerful that it can convince us that a scarcity exists, throwing us into unnecessary competition and thereby objectively creating the scarcity we initially feared.” ⬅️ Sounds like the TP debacle of the spring to me! 3y
PurpleTulipGirl We assume far too many things are zero sum and get stressed, rather than creative. This spring, during the TP debacle, a bunch of my friends put add-on bidets in their bathrooms. 3y
alisiakae @PurpleTulipGirl so true! And that is a great idea! We started a trading group in our neighborhood to share supplies (PPE, homemade masks, clorox wipes, TP etc) when we found them. As well as puzzles and board games which we kept rotating between families! (edited) 3y
PurpleTulipGirl We have a puzzle exchange table at church. It got off to a slow start, but had become very popular. 3y

Pickpick

Just finished listening to this so feeling inspired! I recently watched A Life on Our Planet which was devastating but optimistic. I‘ve been on the lookout for ideas on what changes to make, and this was a good starting point. I think my biggest challenge is spreading the word - I‘ve been vegan since Jan and my family haven‘t always been understanding 😕. I like the idea of being a “stubborn optimist” though! #climate #climatecrisis #vegan

Sace I was vegan for so many years and I really wish why I stopped. My husband and I are moving back into at least a meatless diet. Dairy is next (though we haven't had cow's milk in 15 years.) Recently I manged to start using reusable shopping bags. 3y
Sace *managed 3y
alisiakae I‘m reading this right now too. 3y

Cosyreader @Sace I read when I started that many vegans go back due to pressure from family/friends and I understand why. Sometimes I just feel like a nuisance. That‘s really good progress though, even one meatless day a week makes a difference. Well done with the bags too, I‘d like to cut down on plastic. I‘ve started using period pants instead of pads and they‘re great 3y
Cosyreader @4thhouseontheleft nice! What do you think? 3y
Sace @Cosyreader the sad thing is that I did have support, it just got so damn hard. Cooking is not my thing and both my husband's job and mine got so time consuming and we started cooking less and doing more takeout. I'm at the time in my life that I wouldn't be needing period pants so I don't want to invest in them. My daughter loves hers though. (I realize how crappy I sound.) 3y
Cosyreader @Sace I get that, I‘m not a fan of cooking either. I like that there are now loads more alternatives and lots of “fake meat” available which makes things easier. More options on menus as well! That‘s okay, glad your daughter likes hers. I didn‘t think you sounded crappy at all 😊 3y
Chrissyreadit @Cosyreader any time you need or want encouragement about being vegan feel free to tag me! I‘m very realistic about how challenging it can be! I started as a vegetarian over 30 years ago because of my concern for the environment. Now, I add a lot of health info- one documentary that helped family members recently was The Game Changers. Forks Over Knives is great too. I do not share the animal ones because I am tired of hearing someone doesnt want 3y
Chrissyreadit To feel guilty and won‘t watch it (it just makes me dislike the person- so you know it‘s wrong and hurtful but you do it anyway bothers me). I‘m not sure what your income is- but The Hungry Root is great for fast, fresh and delicious- you choose what food and diet you want. Also, there are a handful of go to dishes I‘m learning even now to use on days I can‘t cook. And Beyond Meat and Impossible burgers are hits- expensive but my kids friends 3y
Chrissyreadit Love to eat over and eat them- ( we have two friends that also quarentine and we keep a social bubble together) Again, feel free to reach out any time! 3y
Cosyreader @Chrissyreadit thank you so much! I reached a stage where I was getting overwhelmed and anxious after watching graphic footage of factory farms and slaughterhouses and any time I tried saying something I was accused of trying to “convert” my family like it was a religion. I don‘t have vegan friends so it can be lonely but I‘m in a few Facebook groups which helps. My mum is doing Veganuary with me so I‘m excited about that! 3y
Chrissyreadit What is veganuary? 3y
Cosyreader @Chrissyreadit I plan on putting on Cowspiracy for my parents plus Forks over Knives and The Game Changers. I want to watch Dominion, Land of Hope and Glory and Earthlings but I‘m quite nervous because I know they‘ll be upsetting. I know what you mean, I get frustrated about the hypocrisy, especially because my family love dogs. 3y
Cosyreader @Chrissyreadit Veganuary is where people try being vegan for a month and it‘s how I started last year. It‘s run by a charity who work with food manufacturers to get more plant based options and I‘m really excited this year because there‘ll be so many more things to try! There‘s a site where you can sign up and do the challenge and they send emails every day which really helped me stay motivated and informed 3y
Chrissyreadit Nice!!! I love that! 3y

My next pick for #NFN2020, written by the architects of the 2015 Paris Agreement.

Timely, considering the first day the US can legally withdraw from the Paris Agreement is Nov 4. 😣Which is one day after the election. 😰

RamsFan1963 I've read this. It's a little hard for me to take, their earnest cockeyed optimism was hard for me to swallow. 3y
alisiakae @RamsFan1963 and that‘s what I need this week, optimism! I‘m only on Part 1, and I do think they seem overly optimistic (esp considering only 7 countries are currently in compliance with the Paris Agreement). But I‘ve found some useful talking points when speaking with conservative family members & acquaintances, the authors say it much better than I do. It‘s written on a level that my middle schooler can learn from, too. 3y
Clwojick I love your journal layout. 😻 3y
