After a making a small dent in my WWII HF, I thought I‘d add an WWII NF to the pile. I knew about the spy who survived Ravensbrück by successfully (albeit falsely) claiming she was related to Churchill. But that‘s it - I didn‘t know the harrowing journey of Odette Sansom, recruited by the British SOE to return to her home country of France as a courier for British spies - or that she was the most highly decorated spy during WWII. And now I do.

Odette was an amazing women, there is no doubt about that. Her bravery and optimism was astounding. My biggest critique of this book is that there wasn‘t enough of it. I wanted more about what her wartime missions actually entailed. I wanted more detail about the people she worked with- something more along the lines of Olsen‘s “Madam Foucault.” It was a bit light for such an important WWII figure.

I had never heard of Odette Sansom before, but she is the most highly decorated spy of World War II. She worked for the British military as a courier (second most dangerous job in terms of fatalities). Since she grew up speaking French, she was recruited to go into German-occupied areas in France. During this time, she fell in love with her commanding officer, was captured and taken to a concentration camp, and helped many people along the way.

Odette Sansom deserves to be more well known. After volunteering in WWII she was sent into occupied France where she successfully ran missions until betrayed by a member of her unit. Imprisoned & tortured by the Gestapo & was eventually sent to Ravensbruck concentration camp, put in a dark isolation cell & left to die. My next read is this non-fiction about the most decorated spy in WWII, male or female. Odette Sansom was born in France before leaving to marry an Englishman & have 3 kids. When war broke out, she volunteered & was sent into occupied France as a spy & saboteur. Completing mission after mission, she falls in love with her partner, Captain Peter Churchill before they‘re both captured & sent to concentration camps. A riveting read so far.🧨 🇫🇷

Odette Sansom/Lise risked her life by joining a British spy network in France in WWII as a courier. She was later captured and showed enormous tenacity and courage. I expected more spycraft, but this is largely the story of who she was and what she survived—things that would and did break others. I found a couple of flow issues in the book but overall found it very compelling.
